Heavy LAG on PlanetSide
« on: March 22, 2004, 05:08:00 pm »
Doc,can you re-install your video codecs, It sounds like it might be a corrupt file in the planetside installation.
I sometimes get lag and my system is almost the same.

I read somewhere that if you have one of the free video players installed , like real player you should close it down before playing Planetside
Maybe that will help.? :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I already re-installed my video card & PlanetSide. While playing, there are no programs running, not even my virus scanner. Believe me, I wouldn't post for help before I have tried everything in the book :)

I solved my problem with PlanetSide. I use(d) some tweaking programs to optimize Windows. It seems that one of those programs changed a setting in the registry called "LargeSystemCache". The default value should be "0", but in my case it was set to "1". I changed it back to "0" and no more lag spikes. On high details (all set to high and all textures enabled) in large battles I get 75 - 130 FPS. The are still the high B/s peaks, but they're not affecting my FPS anymore.

Back to topic, I voted for Friday. A day during the week will be more difficult, due to work. But I'll see what the outcome of the vote will be.

Optimize the System Cache Size (Windows NT/2000/XP)
Category: Home > Windows > File System > Caching and Memory

This setting controls whether the system cache is optimized for a Desktop computer or network server. Network servers usually require more memory dedicated to file caching, while desktop computers require more memory for running software applications.

Note: Some programs, such as SQL Server and Exchange Server, will set this value during an installation and override the change.

Settings:
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Session Manager\
Memory Management]
Name: LargeSystemCache
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: "0" for Desktops; "1" for Servers

Funny thing is, it only affected PlanetSide. I also believe it may have caused the frequent disconnects I got with quite a few Battlefiled servers, but I need to do more testing for that to be sure.

I've seen PlanetSide using all of my 1gig of ram, together with a gig of swap file..

that's a lot of memory usage for one game. . . I haven't even seen servers using that much of memory for just one task. ..

Does it frequently use that amount of memory ?

PS at least needs 512mb of RAM to run somewhere near smooth, they donīt give you discount coupons for RAM without a reason. Maybe the game gives with Doc a memory leak or something, so itīs flooding his mem. As far as I know, PS never used all my ram, could do tasks on the background without the game lagging.

would it be to much trouble to ask if you can check the amount of RAM in use the next time you are playing PlanetSide ?

According to my processes tab Planetside uses 693 MB of RAM even in idle, ie when I'm at the desktop and the game is still running.
 ???
