crashes many crashes
« on: August 26, 2003, 05:09:55 am »
i posted at generals.ea but it somehow got deleted and no one answered.

my game used to shut down randomly from anywhere to 10 minutes to 1 hour and a half.  now i just get technical difficulties and serious error.  im positive its not overheating at 90º cause it is suppose to go up to 150º.  And ive scanned for viruses many times and installed the xp service pack.

specs

geforce2 mx 200 its 32 mb
p4 2.4 ghz
512 ram

i tried uninstalling deleting all the files reinstalling and then defrag, that only fixed units blowing up but still errors.  i was thinking if i got a new video card that would fix it but dont have the money right now.

also read somethin in hear about mother board drivers or something not sure

I'd say you've installed DirectX 8.1 only.

And I think you're right about the temp (assuming you mean 90 degree F and not C :))

At what graphical setting are you running Generals ? if you haven't tried already, try playing at minimum settings. Also, try setting your desktop resolution to 16bit.

Do the crashes only happen with Generals or with other games as well ?

As for your motherboard drivers, you should update the VIA drivers.

Make sure you update your VIA chipset.

Do you get any errors when it crashes (I mean a number or detailed message) ?

Just a note for now, those units blowing up in the game was related to a bad serial code. YOu might have accidentally mistyped it one. Reinstalling the game fixed that. :)

I think I know what your problem is. You are using the onboard sound chip and it is really crappy for games. Here is the snippet from your Direct X output:

Quote

-------------
Sound Devices
-------------
      Description: VIA AC'97 Audio (WAVE)
        Device ID: PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3059&SUBSYS_B0031106&REV_50
  Manufacturer ID: 1
       Product ID: 100
             Type: WDM
      Driver Name: viaudios.sys
   Driver Version: 6.14.01.3950 (English)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Signed: Yes
    Date and Size: 6/18/2003 17:30:36, 91520 bytes
      Other Files:
  Driver Provider: VIA Technologies, Inc.
   HW Accel Level: Full
         Registry: OK
Sound Test Result: All tests were successful.

I have had nothing but trouble with these suckers. I tried the one that comes with my new motherboard and the games would run all choppy and crash. I tried using the latest drivers for the sound chip and it still did not fix the problem. I plugged in a Sound Blaster Live, disabled the onboard card in the BIOS,  and then all my games ran perfect. It looks like you may have a slightly better one than the one I have because mine had no hardware buffers at all. I would suggest buying a Sound Blaster Audigy if you have the cash. If not you can pick up a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 for around $40 online.

A good start point in that case would be first to disable it and then see how the games run ?

Another thing you might want to try is to install older Nvidia drivers, like 21.xx That seems to solve several crashes as well...

Do you still have the problem or did you get it resolved ?
