Expanding the Forum
« on: August 24, 2003, 10:05:39 pm »
Hey, I just want to say I really love the forums I wanted to make a post for one reason. This forum is doing good so far, and I'd like it to stay that way, so I'd like to see if people could post some ideas they might have for making the forum really successful.

I have a few:

1) sig advertising at Fed2k and other large forums.
2) threads for advertising where it is permitted.
3) recommendations to friends.
4) hosting boards for freeware game tech support. Example: a tech support board here for Sardaukar2000. I could put a link in the main area of the game, and since the game might be sold, this would attract hundreds of members.

I hope we all have some ideas :)

I think one of the big draws currently is for tech help. Currently Doc, Gryphon, and myself go to other forums and post in threads where people are frustrated by their technical issues and we suggest coming here for hands on help. I think that we have to be super receptive to new members we bring in to keep the site popular. The problem is when no one has problems they generally don't come here. This used to be the case on the Fed2K tech support forum. Now it seems a lot of members like to post there. I am not sure why though. I hardly ever post there anymore because by the time I read a post seven people have already jumped on it. That is what I would love to see here.  The problem I see now is there is no big game I am aware of where people are having a lot of technical issues. Does anyone know of such a game?

Adding mods and freeware games could expand the audience. We have limited space on this website, but Doc, Gryphon, and myself will have some servers running in the near future where we can serve these games/mods. Mine will have limited bandwidth, but a lot of space.  If the site becomes more popular I would certainly chip in with Doc to pay for more bandwidth/webspace on this server.

I would definitely be willing to pay for more, but I have access to a 500meg ftp site that we could use, but forums can have essentially unlimited boards.

And what I mean about games... we should try and establish the forum as a good place for games to get hosted. My game, your game, and a few others I know of would LOVE the opportunity for some tech experts to riffle through their games and figure them out. This way, links could be made to the site and forum from within the game... and some of my game projects might be sold openly on the market... imagine, a new Dune game, and all the people that buy it, see a link here. Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of fans get this great game and come here.

I would not mind supporting games that are hosted here. One of the problems that I am sure we will encounter though is that we don't have the resources of a commercial game developer. Hopefully between all of us we will have enough system configurations to say that the game runs and has been tested on hardware X-Z and OS versions A, B, and C.  We will also need to consider minimum system requirements and such for any games we support.  I think we can help in these areas.

I admire your confidence. I hope you are right. Like I said I think we can handle supporting these games.

I think we can support everything, just as long as we do it together :)
