strange as it might seem, I am an archer [ recurve, not compound or crossbow ]. And during the times I was shooting at the NK's some trainers seemd to be doing the same thing. Volunteerly even. .. .
Although mostly in the US and other countries, but still. The trainers has such confidence in the shooter that they knew it won't go wong, and needed to analyse the shot from infront. So they somethimes stood near the target disk just to observe them. . . ....

I tried something similar in the army. Our instructor wanted to let us know how it "felt" when bullets came against us.

I can give you a similar army story..

When I got drafted, we at one point had a training, which involved throwing life granades. The captain said that if there were any objections, they could be made. Obviously I objected. At that point, I became the lauging stock of my team.

The Captain told me that I had to do it, but he would let me throw first (the bastard even had me carry the case with granades to the field). Anyways, The team went into a bunker next to the field and I had to join the Captain. Therew as a concrete wall, about the hight of my chest and behind me was a huge, high wooden board.

I got a granade pushed into my hands and was ordered to take out the pin (mind you, my hands were sweaty as hell !). I took out the pin and wanted to throw the damn thing awau as quick as I could.

I got stopped by my Captain and he said to hold it for 10 seconds (the pin was out damned, let me throw the damn thing !). After 10 seconds, he told me to throw the granade as close as possible next to the bunker. I threw the garanade almost next to the digged in concrete bunker (I got scraed, cause my team mates were in there, but I assumed the captain knew what he was doing). After the trow, I immdiately ducked away, behind the concrete wall. My captain pulled me up again and said, boy, you need to watch where it lands (hence why I knew where it landed).

The granade exploded and I could hear the schreds hitting the wooden board behind me. I stood up again and though "man. piece of cake". I went back to the bunker and when I opened the door there was absolute silence... no said anything. The granade had landed so close to the bunker that the sund of the explosion sounded triple as hard as it did on the field where I was standing. My team mates were scared shitless and all I could do was laughing :)

That is a funny story Doc. I never knew you were in the military. They still have a draft in the Netherlands?

Actually, the money sucked compared to the job I had at the time. But I would want to do it all over again if I could. I had a great time when being in the army :)

Human Resource Technician?

Nope...

I'll tell you, cause you'll never guess.. They decided I would be good repairing trucks ans jeeps... I have absolutely no clue how they came up for me doing that though.

Some of the good things... whenever would would go on training, we'd never had to do what the others did. When they slept outside in their little tents, we had a trunk which could be made a sleeping trunk. Where normally our tools would be stored, we could change that into beds. So they out in the rain, we dry inside.

When we went on training (camp sort of) we took with us:
1) Microwave
2) Television (we made our own in the trees)
3) Video recorder
4) Game console
5) Lots and lots of food (what they make in the army is not any normal food, hence the micro wave)
6) coffee maker (best coffe is the one you make yourself)
7) Radio

Obviously it wasn't allowed, but somehow our sgt knew to hide all this pretty well (they didn't even spot our antenna... or he made some kind of deal with the officers we didn't know of)...

When we had nothing to do, the sgt would give me the key's to a Landrover and told me to "break" something...

A hell of a time, which I would relive in an instant ;D
