Hi guys,

Is there any other VPN software besides WINGATE VPN, VXNET for WIN98SE ??

Thanx ;)

edit : And it's better if it more user-friendly (easy to setup)

You mean a VPN server for Windows or a client ?

The client can be downloaded at Microsoft.

A router is not an equivalent to a VPN server if you want to play online. . .
Besides that you need a pretty fast computer to host a game and a VPN server at the same time.
A router is also much easier to set up then a VPN network. For one, your VPN adapter can only be used as VPN adapter, you will probably lose all other connectivety of the adapter.

A VPN server is used if you would like to create a local network although this over a greater distance, saying from London to Amsterdam. And making that in a secure way.
For internet games it will be mostly useless, because you are creating a local network. Not an internet connection.

You use a router if you want to connect more local computers to the internet.

So in that way I was puzzled to see you could use a router or a VPN server for the same function.

For network games to work on a VPN network you will need to host your own server. And if the game is internet enabled serving it on a VPN instead of the internet is besides the added security to a VPN network no different.

Which game would you like to play , and to what are you refering to with GOL ?

ok, stupid question on my part. . . it's about Generals . . .
A VPN server would enable you to set that game up through the internet with other people without an online server, just like a local network. But you will need a possible extra 500mHz for the VPN server / client on each computer. Even more if you are running with a Celeron or other low cash CPU.If one of you has a WinXP computer you could try this
[ http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm ]
Not shure if Win9X would be a good OS to set up a VPN server with, as it's network protocol isn't as good as NT versions. I don't know of any free VPN servers that really work, or work ok for that matter.

Don't think a router would help you anything if you want to host an game over the internet.

I guess you want to run a LAN game on a WAN, is that what you want to do? I need to know what you are trying to do before I can offer any help.  I am not sure how PCAnywhere will help. All PCAnywhere does is let you access (login) to a remoted PC that is connected to the internet or a WAN.

You can't use PCanywhere for it. It's just a remote terminal programm.

Why do you wan't to do that via a VPN, you could also set up dial in accounts on your computer for them. Giving them dial up access to you, just not a VPN acces as that's needs more processing power. And again, VPN isn't even enabled in Win9X by default. You need to install the abilety for it first.
Does one of the others you want to play with have WinXP or Win2000 ?
It is more easy to set it up in that OS, WinXP even has the option standard build in [ see the link 6 posts back ]

Can I ask what your CPU speed is ?
An if you enable an adapter as a VPN dial in one, there is the option that it will be useless for all other protocols.

In short, I would suggest to get Win2K or WinXP if you would like to host a dial in server.

just an article for more info if you like :

WinXP would simplefy the situation. :)

And yes, they will need to connect to your computer using your internet IP. If you are not shure of what it is you can use www.showmyip.com to look it up.
Make shure the users who want to dial in have an account with dial in permission on your computer.

Gentlemen,

I need your help.   I am trying to set up a VPN for all of my friends to connect to and play command & conquer generals using the LAN Lobby.  I have been sucessful creating a VPN connection (using SSH Sentinel Client) to my Linksys BEFVP41.  I am able to see all of my computers in my network and I'm able to access shared folders.

Now for the problem.  For some reason I cannot see the VPN users in the LAN Lobby.  I have enabled NetBios broadcast on the BEFVP41 and still no VPN users show up in the LAN lobby .  If I use one of the computers that is actually inside my LAN, that computer will show up in the LAN Lobby.  A VPN user will not show up in the LAN lobby eventhough he is connected to my local area network.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is my understanding that it uses TCP/IP.  I know that C&C Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge used IPX but, when they made General's they switched to TCP/IP.

in Generals you have to option to select which network IP it uses. If you have multiple IP's, or are behind a router you can select which IP address Generals uses.
Check on which IP it uses and if not set to your VPN IP change it to that one. :)

Sorry Gryphan,

I misunderstood you.  When the VPN user connects to my linksys BEFVP41 the VPN client manually issues an IP address inside my network (for example 192.168.2.50).  Now when the VPN user wants to see who is in the LAN Lobby the VPN user selects this IP address (192.168.2.50) and then goes to the LAN Lobby.  At this time the VPN user will not see any of my computers that are in the LAN lobby.

I have never set up vpn, but it sounds like the computers are set only to talk to the server. Maybe try running some kind of service on a computer at one end of the gateway and a client trying to conenct to it though vpn (like an ftp server) to see if they can see each other. Just knowing they can ping each other is not enough because the gateway may not be allowing any other communicatipns between clients.

I realy dont know what im talking about here, its just a guess and what i would try.

I am curious. . could you check the VPN network if any other games work [ or network applications ].
And could you check them with the IP protocol and the IPX protocol.
[ the last part is pure curiosity on my part, although it would also help to trouble shoot it ]

If you got a the manual for your router, could you check which protocols it can route with a VPN network. I'll look at the manual for your router tomorrow when I [ probably ] have it at hand. :)

[ trying C&C red allert will be an example for IPX network games, where I think Unreal tournement uses IP ? Just examples though :) ]
