Topic: Cannot run CnC General

I cannot get Generals to run, although it installs fine.

The message I get tells me to use the latest video drivers (I am) and to use DirectX 8.1 or higher.

I am using WinXp, and have tried the supplied DirectX 8.1 and 9 without success. I have rebuilt my PC from scratch without any change.

My video card was a GeForce 4 MX 440, but I've upgraded to an FX5900 to try to get around the problem.  I am using the latest drivers from WinFast (the video card OEM).

Windows is patched to the hilt.  The game has been updated.  Where can I go from here?  Is there a command line switch to disable this sort of checking?

First thing to do is get a !!!SMALLER!!! pic of you're self, It's 1:48 am here and you scared the shit out of me with that pic.
Second, download WHQL detonator drivers
Third, try to reinstall you're directx

I think you need help on finding a good video card too

Try lowering your desktop resolution to 1024x 768.

I also have an Nvidia geforce4 mx 440 card, I can't get the demo of the game to run either ?
My resolution is on 1024 X 768.
If you solve your problem please let me know, thanks.

I have reinstalled DX 9.0b (which other games use and require just fine)
CnC Generals
My Nvidia Drivers adn even rolled back to the 44.03 drivers (the last ones i knew that worked)
I have blasted the nvidia.

the Generals EZ file says im running dx 8.1
but I am running 9.0b and my dxdiag agrees with me.

That Easy file thingy has never worked the way it should if you'd ask me. I wouldn't trust it and would rather look at the directx info.

I've noticed you seem to have a VIA chipset, did you upgrade your VIA motherboard chipset drivers ?

If you download the Nvidia tweaking tool try setting the fast write to off and Side band addressing to on, this worked for me, I can now play Generals.
Using geforce4mx440 PCI 64 MB.I have the 45,23 detonator drivers installed.

I am not sure about that error message, but I think you need to get a better sound card than the AC97. That sound chip is crap for PC gaming and has no hardware buffer whatsoever. I would recommend getting a Sound Blaster Audigy or Live! sound card and disable the onboard sound chip in the BIOS.

That error message reported from the game can be misleading. I notice that you are using Windows 2000. Did you install the game as an administrator and do you have admin privelages when you try and play the game. I looked at your dxdiag and see nothing wrong there.

Go to http://www.omegacorner.com
and download the Omega Nvidia drivers,they worked for me !
