Quality card for its price?
« on: July 14, 2005, 05:09:59 pm »
I've been considering buying a new video card. It seems that my current one starts to have trouble running some of the newer games at higher resolutions and higher details.
So I've been looking for potential candidates to be bought. I've checked some review sites mentioned here, but it seems like they more often review the newest and most expensive cards. And I always intend to stay below the very high prices. 250 euros is really my limit. But now I've found a card a little more expensive then that, and I was wondering what you thought of it.
It's:
XFX GeForce 6600GT 256MB DDR3 DVI AGP         €     259,00

The 128 MeB version of the same type is 70 euro cheaper. But I believe the amount of video memory still holds a great share in the card's performance.
Or are there any other cards you can recommend me. My price limit is around the 250 euros.

The specefications I have for a video card are that I should be able to run the newest games at acceptable resolutions. I'm satisfied with 1280x960, and very happy with 1600x1200 (above it isn't necessary, since my monitor can't handle bigger anyway), and having full graphic details (for the most)
I don't freak out if there is a little frame drop when having unusual many items on the screen (like 10 seperate explosions at the time) so basically I need a card with above average to good peformance.
Like my Geforce 4 Ti4800SE when I bought it 2 years ago (I still think the Ti-series were often ignored unfairly, btw)

Thanks for the help

I have the 128mb version and you won't hear me complaining. Excellent for a reasonable price IMHO. I fthey have an 256mb version, I'd go for that one..

Well, that is one positive comment already :)

I'll probably buy the card, but first... da vacation!

Actually if Doc recommends it I would say buy it since he always seems to keep current with the latest games. I have become more content to wait a few years before upgrading and I have not really done the research necessary to offer advice at this time.

Well, I finally got it (actually a few days ago) and I like it.
It's a monster, I play games with full graphic detail, at my monitor's max resolution (1600x1200) with anti-aliasing, and all still runs without a frame-drop.
That is what I expected from this expensive thing though, but I'm happy I wasn't dissappointed.

So, thanks for the advice! :)
