Topic: Generals - XP Simple Network but Conn. Timed Out

Hi,

We are running 2 xp machines p4 2.4 etc, connected through a switch not router. The computers talk, cs, q3, ut work except generals. The error message is as follows

Connection timed out - no IPX protocols installed, standard TCP/IP

This message occurs after say 1.5sec. We have also tried on another XP machine plugged into a different switch (no router) and got the exact same problem.

Could you check if the IPX protocol is installed on both computers ?

it should be among the list of protocols.


to access that screen and ad the protocol if missing you can look at this page which explains it.
You just have to folow the steps up to the adding of the protocol. Changing the adapter settings won't be needed.

we are both using xp machines even the other machine that we tried it on. We do not have ipx installed, as we do not believe its required. Other people we know do not have ipx installed.

We installed IPX and it worked, why is this. The game states that it runs with TCP/IP? We were wondering why we recieve the error
"connection timed out" when ipx is not installed

The game needs IP protocol to play online. To play on a Local Area Network it uses IPX. [ I think ]
