Upgrading my pc
« on: September 16, 2003, 07:05:58 pm »
Since 4 weeks I've been playing on this damn spare-pc, cause I was to rough building watercooling on my a7n8x mobo. So I decided it was time for a little upgrade that I like to share with all you people and I want to know what you all think of it.

Asus PC-DL Deluxe Mobo
2 x Intel Xeon 2,4 Ghz HTT FSB533
Enermax EG465AX-VE(W)FM PSU 465 Watt
2 x Swifttech MCW-5000PX Watercooling for CPU

These products will all be placed in my Koolance PCW-601 casing I already own, together with my Asus GF4ti4200-128mb, 2 x 512 Corsair DDR-SDRAM 333Mhz in dual-channel mode, 1 x 80gb WD and 1 x 120GB IBM. Main task of the system will be internet and playing games (unreal tournament). My OS will be WinXP + SP1

My 'old' system will I'll be going to use as a spare PC for Lan's (a7n8x deluxe, 1800+@2000+, GF2ultra-32mb, 2x256 mb DDR266 dual channel)

I ordered all the components just an hour ago on various places on the internet, so it will be a week or 2 when everything arrives (mobo + cpu's weren't on stock), so I will be updates everytimes some component arrives (will be adding pics in the future)

You just have to be there. . .euh. . here again Ei ! :)

I am asking around at school, although I doubt they have got the time. . .there is another 75 people counting LAN around the same data, mayby 3 or 4 will come to both LAN's. .

I am thinking of Ghost Recon. . .although I doubt you guy's are going to like that. ;)
Any game should be ok, just keep in mind that some might need to install it . . taking a few minutes. .

UPDATE 1:

Today I received one of the many orders, it were special-size hoseclamps & tie-wraps. And got a confirmation that my mobo has been shipped and that I could expect it to arrive within a couple of days.

Also after a re-evalution of my budget I decided I could even spare the money for a new graphics card, so I decided to go for an  Ati 9800 pro, cause the FX5900ultra I originally had I mind is to expensive. I never was a big Ati-fan, but I'm going to give it a try. The card is expected to ship in 1,5 weeks, together with an extra bank of 512mb DDR333 Corsair memory.

UPDATE 2:

This morning I went to the postoffice because 2 boxes has arrived. It turned out to be my motherboard, powersupply and some little stuff like 2 casefans and some watercoolstuff. Also got 2 emails from the other shops, my xeons will arrive begin next week, the watercoolblocks are on my way, so I will have them tomorrow with any luck. Friday next week I'm going to the store to get the 9800pro and some mem. But when I opened the box of my psu I saw it was the wrong one  :'( I checked the bill and my email confirmation and saw I gave up the wrong type. So I am now the proud owner of a very silent 460 Enermax Psu NOT suited for dual xeon. So I ordered some electrical stuff on my work and this week I am going to make my Psu dual xeon worthy by hand and soldering iron.

I could, but that's no fun. I've got some tweaker-spirit in me, so I'm going to use it  ;D

Sorry I have not posted here until now. I am quite envious of your soon to be system. Those Xeon processors must have set you back quite a bit. I'd like to see some pics of the system in various stages of construction and the final product obviously. I would hope you don't have any serious game issues with a rig like this.

Those xeon's isn't my biggest problem, my problem is time. I' very busy at the moment with work and some private stuff that I have very little time to get to stores (read as decent stores who have watercooling en dual-cpu stuff) or the postoffice. The first moment I have time again is friday next week for my graphics card and memory. I've I let it come by mail, then I have to hope I can find the time to go to the postoffice. So I told myself I wanted the rig up and running the 1st week of october, and so far it won't be a problem.

My PSU problem is solved by the way, I made myself a cableadapter, I abused an old PSU for it. The 8-pin connector is a small version of the 20-pins ATX connector, a standard molex is to big, so with a very sharp cutting knife I reduced the connector from 20-pins to 8-pins. The 8 loose wires it soldered to a molex and now it fits.

But I won't be building my rig until I got everything here until the last screw, so when I begin I can finish it, I will make pictures of course.

And about gaming, I don't think it will be a problem. I'm going to use WinXP Pro + SP1, and I must say, I never had big problems with games in the past with any system, I always choose my PC-components with great care, won't go for lowbudget shit. I've done a lot of research about Dual Xeon, it isn't a thing I decided in one night. But time has got to learn, I don't hurry myself with it, and that's the best thing to start with I think. But thank you for your interest Number6, I really like it when people respond. And also the people who already responded and will respond in the future, also thanks.

The only disadvantage I will have with the rig, is that I have to run server all the time with Unreal Tournament  ;D

hope it works out with that PSU. . . it won't be the first LAN we are going to have with things blowing up .. . .
- gryphon is thinking harddrives .. .grafics card .. .grafics card and the beloning PCI socket. . now I come to think of it. .we have destroyed quit some hardware along the years. . -

btw. if you would be interested in more pictures of dual systems .. 2cpu.com has a small picture galery..

UPDATE 3:

When I came home today I found another box, it contained my watercoolblocks (Swiftech MCW-5000PX rev. 2), the size, the weight, they are godlike compared to my 'old' socket A koolance waterblock. They even included Arctic Aluminium coolpaste! The only thing is that my waterhoses are a little to small, but that ain't nothing that a little bit of ducktape can't solve  ;D. Pictures will follow

UPDATE 3.1

Tonight I practiced mounting the tubes onto the watercoolbock. My ducktape proved to be a perfect waterseal. So my watercoolingsystem is ready to go.

UPDATE 4:

I just returned from the store where I bought me my 9800pro. And at the postoffice are my Xeon's, so I start building the rig on monday. The only thing that worries me, is that I may have a shortage on tubes. I ordered some extra ones, but I need a miracle to get them here on time for monday. Otherwise, I must rely on my old, thinner tubes and lots of ducktape  ;D
