Question:

When configuring a cisco 2600 series router, I setup a dhcp server on that router

does cisco say I need an exclusion here.. if there is nothing like a server wich needs a static ip on that segment.
because in my opinion the adres of de default gateway can never be leased to a client...

not sure if I understand your question correct .. . could you rephrase it ?

doing it the cisco-way (like mr. aerts is, and you know that).  is it neccessary to exclude your "default-router" address? when using ip dhcp.

note: your default router address is usually the IP address of your FastEthernet interface where dhcp is configured on..

Well. You have two types of clients. One which need a DHCP server and dynamic IP. And ones that don't. Servers, gateways, access points and stuff like that always get. ... no waith. . did I say always ? Anyway they should always get a static IP.

Common best-practices say you get a range of IP's. Let's say 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.50 which are static and you give to servers and stuff. Then you get your clients on the DHCP part of that network. . say 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200. So you set your DHCP server to leas only adresses 100 - 200.

To answer your question with that. Should your routers IP ( serial, ethernet or whatever ) fall in the DHCP range. I'd say only when h*ll freezes over.

Actually it is when NOT using a exclusion range on a router.
having a default-router defined,
your router wil NOT give away the first adress in range..
which is your fast ehternet address..

but like teachers are, they always know better, they say it has to be with an exclusion..
but I dont agree with them..

if you use a server farm, yes, you should use it..
but in only network with some home pc clients.. it should not be neccesary..
