Fan problem
« on: January 24, 2006, 11:51:00 pm »
I'm not a very big Fan of Fan-problems (but well, who is ;D)

Ok, so here's the problem:
since a few days ago, one Fan started to make a noise in my computer (as is its stuck but still trying to work (wich it halfly does)
Now is the problem: what should i do: - probably have to bring it to the shop for a new fan or so (atleast that i'm afraid will have to be done.
But i don't know either what the fan is for, so i thought, maybe post here and see if any of you know.

Just in case i made a few pics of it as my description prolly is more cryptical then informational.

Description: the fan is in a little box on the mobo (not close to the CPU, more or less behind the video card). The only thing the mobo manual says is (atleast the little square where i think the fan is placed) "nforce4 SLI".

I was also wondering if it was anything critical, that should be threated right away or something that just needs to be taken care of sometime.

It is normal to a fan to get dusty.

Dust in your computer gets stucked onto it and around it...
So take a good breath, and blow it like hell.. (watch out for dust coming in your direction.)
make sure its clean afterwards, and probably it will function again..

if not report back ;)

edit: it looks quite clean.. but try it any way..
you could also try to press the fan ( i had once a fan on a VGA card, and it also was making a noise..  pressed it and it clicked back into place..
so jently put a little pressure on the asus-text on the fan, maybe it has just become a bit loose..

Hmm, yeah haven't tried the pushing yet, tho the blowing....i even tried it with a vaccum cleaner and a can of air, so i guess its not dust :)

Hmm, the North Bridge......What does that mean?  ;D

P.S. i may have to go in vac mode in a while, beacause a few other probs entered  :'(

1. pushing it to get it to "click"back in didn't work....i could move on front and backwards a bit, but it didn't click in its position :-\
2. a little moment ago it had times where it would totaly stop, and is getting less every moment it seems......and the box kinda gets realy realy hot like hell *felt with own finger*

Edit: I think it dfenitly gave its life now  :-\ its not turning, where it used to start a little bit again as i spushed it around a bit.

this image will make it clear to you i think...

About your fan, how old is your mobo...??

If its not older than a year, i would go back to the store, because of the waranty on it..
else you need to see how long you have waranty..

You can also buy the same fan, screw this one of, and replace it..
but be carefull with that..
i would choose for the waranty, if it has not expired yet..

Yup i went for the warranty, and instead of replacing the fan they replaced a whole new motherboard  ;D (and the other is just send back to the producing facility (can't remember the word for it)

From the picture it seems to be working for the CPU in some kind of way, and is led by the front side bus ???

The arrows are datachannels.. (cables or circuits on your mobo)

Your CPU gets his data from the northbridge. This one will store data in the RAM or sends data to the VGA card to display things on screen.
This data is all send through the front side bus.
If its data to be stored on the harddisk, the frontside bus sends the data to the south  bridge, which in turn sends the data to the ide or sata controller. THis one writes the data on the disk.
Also requests go that way. CPU needs data, request through the north bridge, frontside bus, southbridge to the ide controller. THen the data is send back the same way.

And I thought you where sleeping all those hours in class ? ;)

Note that this explenation is valid for X86 hardware, some other hardware types might have other scematics for it. Although not verry different.
