Half Life 2 problem

A friend of mine keeps getting crashes with this message " CMesh error in DX8 Vertex Buffer " any ideas on how he can fix it guys ?

What are the specs ? What are the circumstances when this happens ?
Are all the drivers up to date ?

I did find a link in which a very similar topic is discussed.
You may want to try some of the suggestions posted there.
