Chess for powerusers
« on: June 23, 2003, 04:23:33 pm »
I just read an interesting article today, you can read it for yourself here:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1013

What I found interesting in the article was the comment about the P4 not being as efficient as the P3 processor. Here is the quote:

Quote
One of the problems with currently available processors is that they are not particularly well suited to the integer calculations used for chess. A Pentium 4 will be slower at chess than a Pentium 3 of an equivalent clock speed. The upshot is that although I was switching from a dual-processor 1.2 GHz Pentium 3 machine to a dual-processor 2.8 GHz Xeon machine, the new computer wasn't 2.2 times as fast, which is what you would expect from the clock speeds. Instead, it turned out to be about 1.7 times as fast at chess

This article has also started an interesting discussion on slashdot:

Anyone here willing to build a dual xeon system to play chess at the Granmaster level. You can rule me out because I can barely beat Chessmaster 9000 at the easy difficulty.

Sorry, they day I can pay for a dual Xeon 2.8 gig for myself I'm probably not going to play chess with it.
I could try it on my schools mainframe though ;D

I could not afford a dual Xeon system either. I don't have a need for one anyway. I hust thought it was funny how the guy was complaining about the speed differences between older processors and the newer Pentiums. I will take a 1.7 times increase of speed and be happy about it.  ;D

Good to know for anyone building a chessengine.

Chessmaster 9000 (www.chessmaster.com) goes from level 23 to 2764. Playing above 1500 is where I start losing (the fun), with a P3.

The program you want to get is "Deep Fritz 7". Here is a link where you can buy it:

It is a little steep. I hope you play chess extremly well. If not I imagine this program will frustrate you to no end.

I know the rules, I think that says enough about my chess abilities. I´ll go and try the hardest level and try to stay in the game as long as possible.  ;D

You will be cursing those 2 Xeon processors when you are beaten in like 3 moves every game.

If the program and cpu's are really good, then 1 move shouldn't be a problem

sorry .. I forgot to answer this one. .  :-[

Not shure on the board layout [ A-1 and such ] .. so hope you understand.

pown in front of your king 1 step forward. [ b5 - c5 ]
quien 2 diagonal. [ a4 - c6 ]
bishop next to the king 3 diagonal. [ I think, a6 - d3 ]

Then if your oponent hasn't taken any counter messures .. . check .. . moving your quien from c6 to g6.

Think it is called the "Trukish opening" . .

If your opponent has moved a piece  making the above impossible you can usually counter that with one of your horses. Instead of your night on the left of the bord .. as in this examplpe with 2 moves you can place the right horse to cover the quien as she moves in. .. some variations of this move are possible.

And it's not 7 or 6 moves. . .the fastest is in the 4th move. . . not bad he ;)
