socks proxy
« on: June 25, 2003, 11:44:23 pm »
Have been looking for a programm capable of routing any network connection from behind a socks proxy. And sofar couldn't find any. So it's getting on my nerves. ... :-\ ;D

It seems NEC had one on a page called socks.nec.com or someting like that. Wasn't able to find it though.

Does any one here know of a programm that can be installed on a network based PC which will enable it to send all of it data to a socks [ 4 and 5 both full resolving capebileties ] proxy server. The catch [ as there always is one ;)], the client program has be be compatible with Win2000 or higher. Not a lower version as the Win2K clients are tweaked to reject any program that uses any part of Windows based on backwards compatible versions. So it has to run for Win2k, not lower with the capebilety for Win2K to run it.
Hope that made any sence :-\

I guess you are asking for a socks server? Here is a free java implementation :

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~kirillka/SOCKS/

Some company called Sambar has a Proxy server for $99 :

It sounds like Proky servers come with Windows.  What exactly are you trying to do?

Gryphon, searching for socks.nec.com results in this page. I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for though...

That was the page Doc, for some strange reason I couldn't find it anymore :D
And I got rememberd to the fact that the file is a Win16 bit application, which are not-usable on the Win2K pc in the network as they are edited to refuse backwords capebileties for older Windows, DOS and MacOS programs. :-\

It's for a running network. All computers use a proxy that is already setup. It's a Web and socks proxy [ 4 and 5 ]. Clients are Win2K same as the domain server.
The network used the have a NAT router on one of the Win2K servers providing WAN access. That has been changed to a proxy. After the security tweaks the Mercury mail server had to be changed as it's a Win16 bit application, same as a few other things. Resulting in the clients having a few programs that are not compatibel with routing their info through a socks proxy.

I ones saw a guy having the same problem with his laptop. Some networks he plugged it in didn't rely WAN signals though a router. Therefor he had a small program that would route all traffic throuhg a socks port on the socks proxy of that network. Kind of a sneaky way if you tap illigally into another network ...

So that was [ is ] what I am looking for. A way to route WAN traffic from a client through a socks proxy as there is no other way to reach the external network. [ traffic from programs that don't have the abilety to route it through a socks proxy build-in ]

I know! What did we ever do before Google.?

I used to use Altavista prior to Google. Now I exclusively use Google.

Yep, I have looked at the links you gave Number6. We're trying the JAVA based program to see if we can use it. So testing it sofar and can't say if it fits the requirements. :)

At this time the network is back to NAT routing so it can run normally for the moment.
