3DMark a good benchmark ?
« on: June 26, 2003, 07:03:31 am »
If you didn't know, there are several benchmark programs out there, which will show how harwdare performs. 3DMark (Futuremark) is one of the most well known programs. Since the beginning of this year, Nvidia launched an attack (if you can call it that) on 3DMark, stating their benchmarks aren't all that. Read full details here.

I like Nvidia cards better than ATI.  I don't think the 3D Mark test is a valid test of hardware performance. How well these cards play games is what really matters. So far Nvidia dominates the game market.

As I already mentioned I got several problems on my 3DMark. Some of the games crash while testing!

I liked the original 3DMark 2000 and 2001 editions. They were good test utilities and had some nice eye candy to show off your cards muscle. Nowadays a new company is in charge and the neatness factor is not there anymore. I was not all that impressed with the "Wings of Fury" demo and I now use other utitlities to measure my system performance/settings.

3Dmark2001 and 2003 are good benchmarks, it's just Nvidia that screwed up the system... with all their optimizations etc, when infact the R350 is almost 2x faster over the NV35 series in FP DX9 :P

These are just my observations on the current 3DMark/Nvidia situation you mention. I think 3DMark 2003 is a good test of Directx9 features that no game on the market currently takes advantage of. So if you are interested in how well Direct X performs on a card then it is a good generic test. To me it's more important how well the graphics chip vendors support games on the market and to date NVidia has ruled supreme in this area. I think it's a good thing that Nvidia wants to tweak it's drivers for specific games.  ATI seems to be more concerned with raw performance as opposed to actually running games well.
