SIS chipset overheating !
« on: October 06, 2003, 12:22:06 am »
I think I've find the cause of my random freezing problem on my PC.
My chipset has a heatsink stuck on it with a pad !
I read some where that I can mod this.

Has anyone ever done this mod or knows how to cure this ?

 :(

I think that pad is a thermal adhesive that is needed to dissipate heat correctly to the heat sink. If you were to remove it you would still have to use some kind of adhesive to reconnect the heatsink before restarting your system. Why do you think your chipset chip is overheating?

Because I'm getting randome freezups and my cpu temp goes up to 67°c , when I use compressed air to cool the chipset, the temperature drops to 27°c.
Also I read about this on the lottery bbs web site.
I'm back to 34°c ? I just tweak my agp rate to 1X and it seems to have fixed the problem.

I just re-installed the omega drivers for my graphics card, as I did this I noticed that all the other nvidia drivers are still in the registry ! i.e. 45,23 , 44,03,etc.
Although I removed them in add/remove programs.
Does anyone know how I can remove them ?

I already tried the detonator kiler app, but it still doesn't remove them? :-\

Tie-wrap a 40mm fan to your heatsink and make sure that the airflow is faced down onto your heatsink.

[off-topic] I didn't know that a Sis-chipset could get too hot, those chips normally never work  ;D[/off-topic]

How come the fan's airflow should be faced down ? ???

A heatsink needs lots of airflow, the only way to achieve it is to blow air through the heatsink, not pulling it off from it. Look at your CPU-cooler, keep your hand near it and you´ll notice it blows air through it. Try mounting it the other way and look at your cpu-temp.  8)

I don't understand why setting your AGP to 1X lowers the temp on your CPU.  In your original post  did you mean the graphics card CPU (NVidia) , the chipset CPU (SiS), or the Main CPU (AMD) was overheating?  I am not sure what you are asking about as far as the registry is concerned.  I think you may have to manually delete the entries if the uninstall program did not remove them. I would advise you to leave the registry entries alone unless you are 100% sure they are longer needed.

The chipset cpu(sis) is what I meant, number 6.
I have now opened the side panel of mx pc, and the temperature dropped to 20°c.

Are there any casefans in your euh. . .case ?

reorgenising them or adding one or 2 might help getting a better airflow. .

Yes, I put in a case fan and I have a new coolermaster fan and heatsink on my main CPU.
It has worked fine for weeks, this is only since my pc crashed a couple of times on wol recently.

I re-installed my graphics card drivers and my sound blaster live audio drivers, but still the same problem.
I have taken the side cover off my case for now until I have more time to troubleshoot the problem properly.

You could check if their are any programms in the background not responding. They might take up a lot of CPU time . .
