My CPU heat problems have returned !
« on: October 08, 2003, 01:15:15 pm »
Well my heat problems have again reared their ugly head.
After a few crashes trying to connect games on WOL,my CPU is overheating again,I have removed my side panel from my case, and all is ok.
This is strange because after I installed a new coolermaster fan and combined heatsink and case fan, everything was fine until the crashes.

I havn't found out yet what is causing it.

Any new ideas ? :(

I have no clue. Are you sure you've put the fan the right way up ?

yes because cooler master fan and heatsink are fixed together when you buy them.
And after I first installed it it worked fine, but now since the crashes it's returned.
So if the fan was wrong it would have been wrong from the start, not just suddenly appearing.?

I am now having to use my comp with the side case open.

It sounds like you have an airflow problem if the problem goes away when you open the case. Are ribbon cables blocking the flow of air through your case?

No I checked them, the only thing I found was that little air can get in from the front of the case.My case has a little flap at the front bottom edge of my case, for an extra optional usb port.So I have opened this for a little better ventilation.

There has to be something wrong with your case if the heat problem goes away when you open the case. I would check the external fans (Power supply fan) and make sure hot air is coming out of the case.

I've suspected the PSU fan for awhile, so I'm gonna clean it out,get rid of all the dust/dead flies/cockroaches/mosquitos/spiders and the two mice that moved in the other day for the winter ! ;D

Or mod a 120mm@7v Fan in your side panel.

I seem to have found another cause. When I start the xcl proxy app, and then start Emperor my cursor starts being jerky in it's movement. When I close xcl it's ok again ??

I don't know whether it's the cpu overheat causing it or the other way around.
Also my psu is quite cool to the touch ?

Weird ! :(

When your system first comes up you can interrupt the boot sequence and enter the BIOS (Usually by pressing the "Delete" key). In the BIOS there should be a "Hardware Monitor" section that monitors the temperature of the CPU and the case with updates every second or so. It also provides info on the fan speed and voltage readings.

Try to leave your compter case off. If possible, have an external fan blow coo lair inside.

Yes but it doesn't show the CPU temperature under load.
To do this download : http://www.aida32.hu/download
If you play a 3D game for awhile, then as fast as you can start aida32 and click on Computer/Sensor,then you can see how quick your CPU temp lowers.
Or what temp it is as you open the the app. ;)

Re-Docs suggestion, I think I found my problem, I must admit that you hit on it awhile ago Doc.
I was checking out my Logitech Marble wheel mouse settings, because I wanted to slow it down for when I play Emperor BFD.
I found an option box, where it says put click in box to disable acceleration in games.

So I clicked on this and it seems to have solved the heat issue.

Having said that, I also used Tweak Manager XP to clear out empty folders on my hard drive.
So I am not absolutely sure it was the mouse settings or not. :)

Re-Blacknap's post. Emperor is a very graphic intensive game, which tends to heat up CPU's very quickly, especially when playing EMP with alot of units on the map, for a longish time.
It sounds like your PC doesn't have adequate ventilation.

Alot of Comps arn't really designed for gaming, just general use,so maybe you can ask the retailer to upgrade it by installing a fan or two.
Don't do this yourself if your computer is still under warranty, as you will void your warranty !!!

Ok kinda been away awhile, do you mind posting your full system specs? It might not be overheating per say, but might actually be something else, but I don't want to hazard a guess untill I know what you are running for sure. But I had a similar issue that I delt with for the past couple months. (hence being away for awile)

Do you know what the temp in on you proc and or system temp when you shut down? Also does your mobo have the auto shuttdown protect option?

No I disabled the auto protect option.
The temp depends on whether I've been playing Emperor or not.But sometimes it's high when not under graphics load.?
