Please get a decent sound card. That will fix the stuttering problem in my opinion. Be sure to disable the onboard sound chip after you install an add on sound card.

Don't know why the AGP slot should report that, but it does seem to be enabled.
Like Doc says and I have already said before, your sound chip isn't good.
Try and buy a Soundblaster soundcard.

I would say that your pc has a faulty Ram stick, maybe.
I had this problem on my PC until I replaced it, this morning.

My CPU Temp is now back to 39°C with the side panel of my case back on !
Motherboard Temp is 28°C before it was 43°C.

(The thing I noticed when my PC started up, was that the music for windows start, was stuttering, and that is with a Soundblaster live sound card).

Sounds to me like your problem too ! ;)

Well let me put it to you this way. If you are into PC gaming you cannot skimp on:

1) Memory (Get as much and as fast a memory as your motherboard can support)
2) Video Card - again more is better here
3) Sound Card - Most games use all of the fancy features found in decent sound cards.

You seem to have a good system except in the sound department. That AC97 chip is crap. I have one in mys system and I tried it out. For most multimedia stuff it is fine, but when I tried to play Generals the game was choppy as hell. Turned off the on board chip and installed a SBLive!. The game ran very smooth.

Well I thought the same thing, because it says:

"System Manufacturer: MEDIONPC"

in the report file you attached earlier on. And Medion pc's / products are usually distributed through ALDI stores, I think.

Hi, I'm yet another person with the serious error problem. Happened today after I was fiddling with WorldBuilder trying to add AI to a map that didn't support it... tried testing it, and now I'm looking for help.

I've attached DxDiag, can't attach more than one file so the crash log isn't there. I can post that later if you like. The first thing you'll probably notice is my processor speed. I realise a Pentium III at 733mhz is under the ZH requirements, but that hasn't stopped me running it at optimal speeds on medium detail for the past 3 weeks. (Which, mind you, means I'm running it better than my brother's P4 @ 2ghz; WinXP uses half his ram in overhead and he's only got 256mb... yet he gets no errors :P)

Anyway, I thank you for any help you can give, seeing as I can't go back to playing Generals without ZH. :(

I suggest retrograding your nvidia drivers to version 40.72 which is that last WHQL certified version. Here is a link:

Hey fellas, got an odd seriour error problem. Here's the cut-n-paste from the EA Tech Support (stars are for paraphrasing what he said):

Customer 11/06/2003 10:18 PM
While playing...doesn't matter if I'm in Multiplayer or Skirmish, but anytime I try to run/load the map Tournament Island, the game crashes and I get the "serious error".

I've set the res to 75Hz per the Tech Support. Didn't work.
Uninstalled/Reinstalled. Didn't work.

Any other things I need to look at?

Response (Box Frank L.) 11/07/2003 11:44 AM
**get latest drivers for DirectX and Nvidia card**

Customer 11/07/2003 07:26 PM
I am currently running DirectX 9.0b.

I was running Nvidia driver v45.23 for Win98SE. I uninstalled those and installed v43.45. I had the same results with that (game crashed to serious error when trying to load Tournament Island). I then reinstalled v45.23 and tried EVERY map with water on the borders (Tournament Continent, Dark Mountain, Flash Effect, etc). They loaded.

So I went to options and disable Smooth Water Borders. Lo and Behold, Tournament Island loaded.

What gives? Why do the other maps load and not TI? What exactly taxes the game on TI that isn't on the others...and why did the Smooth Water Borders relieve that?

FYI, I ran "regular" Generals and Tournament Island loaded without a hitch (all Custom details ON). So...what does TI have on ZH that doesn't exist on Generals?

Response (Box Frank L.) 11/07/2003 07:35 PM
Hello, Generals and Zero Hour are separate executables, so they do have different code, especially when it comes to the effects in the game. **send me dxdiag.txt**

Customer 11/08/2003 09:04 PM
**sent DxDiag and EAsy_EA files**

 Response (Box Frank L.) 11/09/2003 12:23 PM
Hello, Thanks for sending that dxdiag.txt file! After looking over the information there, it looks like there are some old drivers still installed for the sound card, and that could be causing conflicts. To remove them, you would need to reboot your system into Safe Mode, and remove the duplicate entries from the Windows Device Manager. If you need specific instructions on how to do that, you would need to contact your system manufacturer.

If that doesn't improve the loading of that map with Smooth Water Borders, then what I would suggest is to post your findings on the official message boards, so that it can be read and taken note of by the developers.

Customer 11/09/2003 11:17 PM
I fail to see how a sound card driver won't allow a
certain map to load. Besides, these are the SAME sound
drivers I've had since I installed Zero Hour...and TI
has loaded before. I figured it was a video driver
issue because that's the only thing I have changed
driver-wise since I've had ZH.

In my Device Manage, I only have TWO drivers loaded
(see attached image). Removing either would totally
disable my sound. On top of that, these Nforce drivers
(Asus Nforce2 v1.16) are the only ones Asus (my
motherboard) says to use, as they say the Nvidia's are
not tweaked for Asus boards.

Well your sound drivers are pretty ancient, I would update them at
Nvidia.com

Also try these drivers for your GPU it doesn't really matter what ASUS say, you can always roll back the driver if it's worse.
Here is the link:  http://www.omegacorner.com
If they don't solve the problem Nvidia have released 52.16 drivers that are supposed to be more reliable. ;)

I think updated my sound driver. Can you verify that I did?

If so, my same problem exists. Also, I'm still on Win98SE...I don't think the 52.16 video drivers are for that OS.

Just download the omega drivers for your driver version of 45,23, they will work ! believe me. ;)

P.S. Yes you have updated your sound drivers successfully.
I still think it's your card drivers though.Try em, you can allways re.install your 45,23 drivers if your not happy with the omega ones.
You'd be the first though that has said their not much better than nvidias own.

I guess I'm the exception... the game still crashed on the ONE MAP even with the Omega drivers. I dunno what's going on.

IMO, a part of the problem is with Directx 9. The big issue of that is that you can't uninstall it (apart from a format).

As I'm not sure what you've tried so far, here are some things you could try:

1) If you have two ram modules, take one out and play with one. If that doesn't help, try swapping them around.
2) Play with your computer case open.
3) Try to put the slider of hardware acceleration down a bit.
4) Try setting your desktop res to 800*600 default refresh rate. Make sure that Zero hour doesn't exceed the 800*600.

Download this tool and set Side Band Addressing to enable, with it.
Then try the game again. ;)

Also someone mentioned to me that Windows media player 9.0 can also cause weird problems playing back CD's especially game CD's.
Try uninstalling Media player , then try the game , then re-install WMP and try the game again.

Please let us know if this cures your problem, :)

Okay...I'm back to v45.23 Nvidia driver. I have v2.41 Nforce driver for the motherboard (Asus A7N8X Deluxe).

I ran Zero Hour and turned Smooth Water Borders ON. I then loaded in Skirmish the maps Flash Effect and Tournament Continent. Both loaded, both had the pretty water effects. I THEN, on a whim, loaded Tournament Island. IT LOADED! With the pretty water!

I then exited ZH completely, and retried TI.... CRASH!  >:(

I'm stumped!
(I'll try the Rive Tuner later on when I get home.)

Ok...installed the Riva Tuner.

Found AGP SBA and set it to "1", clicked ok, then ran ZH. Still crashed.

Set it to 1 ? do you mean the AGP rate ? Side Band addressing you enable, you don't set it to 1 ??? ::)

Try this tweaking tool instead of Riva :

Well...when I picked on AGP SBA (under PowerUsers)...there was just a blank space...no drop down, no nothing. I assumed it was binary so I typed a '1' for on.

Do tell, what should I have done?

By the way, the other utility says this:
"GTU 3.2 is not compatible with the 29.60 (or newer) drivers"

Er... ???

It works anyway :
http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/geforce-tweak-utility.php

With this you can tweak Side Band addressing to on, note: you might have to change your refresh rate back to what you like afterwards.
It works on my drivers they are 44.03.

When you go to System/Hardware/device manager/display adapters/properties which driver is it showing ?

It should have the words Omega in the line.

NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X
I uninstalled the Omega's when it didn't see to help.

Installed the other program and enable the SideBand...still the same thing. ZH crashes on the ONE map, Tournament Island when Smooth Water Borders is on.

Got a response from EA that says this is not a problem with XP and the v52.16 driver....but they have heard of this before in Win98. It may or may not be addresses in a patch (depending on how many ppl complain about it.)

I have a question, what type of memory do you have installed (DDR/SDRAM and speed)?

Looking at your problem I think this may be more  a Windows 98 problem more than the game itself. It seems to me that most modern games are pushing the video hardware more than ever and Windows 98 does not handle hardware glitches as well as Windows XP does.

How big is your virtual memory set to ?
Supremmm had this problem too.
Fixed it by increasing the size of his virtual memory.

But like number 6 says water smoothing graphics take alot of graphics power which seriously tests your CPU and windows.

I can't think of anything else that would improve it, why don't you upgrade to win XP ? ;)
