MOHAA Screen Lag
« on: October 12, 2003, 09:50:54 am »
Been playing MOHAA for a bit without a single problem.  Smooth graphics and sound.

Installed a Spy Sweeper and Pop-Up Killer (which I turn off before going to GameSpy to play) and all of a sudden I get screen lag every 30 seconds or so.

I have included the dxconfig file for help.

My System:

Dell Inspiron 5100
2.39 GHz
384 MB Memory
Cable Modem

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Max

Not yet Doc.  That was going to be my next troubleshooting step.

I am not sure if taking them off the HD will do any good but I did uninstall all of my MOHAA stuff, did a clean disk, and a defrag and reloaded MOHAA.

I guess I need to decide what to do with this other software.......

But IF that is the fix, that is not a great fix.  Would still want to run my Spy Sweeper as much as I can....or as often as I can I should say....

Hey Doc,

Uninstalled everything and the lag is still there.

Next plan of action is this.... Gonna do another clean disk, uninstall MOHAA again, defrag and another install of MOHAA...

Gonna be a PITA, but......

Any other suggsetions would be good too...

Let's wait and see if that fixes the issue. If it does we at least know where to look.

Hey Doc,

I did all of that and still have choppy graphics.

The strange part of this whole event is that is a new problem.  I have not had this happen before.....

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Please provide URL's to the software vendors for the two apps you installed. I did a little seraching on pop-up killer and found a lot of products that have that name.

When you uninstalled those programs, did you also uninstall (and then re-install) the game ?

Doc,

When I uninstalled the software (www.webroot.com) I also did a defrag and clean disk.  Then reinstalled MOHAA.

Not to toss this into the punch bowl but JUST about 5 minutes ago my new laptop crashed.  It seems to be a heat issue.  I basically let the thing sit for a bit and it worked.....

So....

I am still getting no where with everything I am trying.  Even took apart this laptop and blew it out......

I am getting really frustrated with this whole thing....

If it's an heat issue, I'm afraid on a laptop there isn't much we can do though.

What you might ant to try is to have an external fan next to it and see if this lag still persists.

Doc,

I think I have the problem fixed.  I think.

I am at work and not on my home connection, but I installed new drivers from Omega and it appears to work fine now.  Of course I have not been able to really test it here at work, they sorta frown on Loan Officers playing MOHAA while at work....grin.

I will test it from the house and if it is the fix, I will post what I did so others may benefit if they have the same type of issues.

Nope, didn't fix it.

Basically I am about to say the hell with it and just no longer play the game.  Afterall, its is just a game.

I have once again deleted everything, defraged, reinstalled and tried it again.

Still the lag is there..........

The ONLY other thing I can do is reformat the HD and just reinstall the Dell crap that came with it and try that.......

Would rather not do that.....

Do you also experience the lag when you're not playing online ? Also, are you able to try a direct connect with a buddy ?

No lag off line at all.

I am once again at work and got online and it worked great.  Smooth and all of that.  Gonna try it again and see if the condition is the same.

When I got to the office I fired up this laptop and went straight to the game, got online and it was fine. Now, The LT has been on for a few hours and I will try it again.

I am starting to think it may actually be my cable connection at home.  This is the fun part of troubleshooting....... just a pain in the ass also....but......

Doc,

Here's the skinny.

After uninstalling most of the world, and reinstalling the other part of the world, and trying new drivers, and defraging more than an angry Vietnam Vet, I think I found an answer.

It's heat.

While at work today the game was working perfect.....then all of a sudden the fan turned on and BOOM!  Clipping started.

So, I  turned off the new laptop and let it cool down.  When I got home I pulled out 135 year old wooden blocks my great great grandmother played with as a kid, took out two triangle shapped blocks about 6 inches long, put them under my laptop on my desk and went after the game.

No clipping of any kind.  And the fan itself has not turned on.  Of course I also have my window open with a fan blow in my general direction and it's only about 60 degrees F here and the game has no clipping.

So, in conclusion, it's all about heat.

Of course I'm freezing my gonads off, but hey, what's a war game without a little discomfort?

I know this is not the best answer in the world to a problem like this with a BRAND New Dell Inspirion 5100 - but it is working so ..... what the hell.
