How to disable a firewall
« on: October 19, 2003, 08:57:01 pm »
As a newbie in online gaming. I understood that I have to disable the firewall to be able to play online. Is this true? And if it is how do I disable it?

Thank's for helping on forehand.

You don't have to disable your firewall. Just give the aplication you are using access to the internet.
If you have a virus scanner you should in some cases disable that, as it can make your game pretty leggy.

If you would have help in howto configure your firwall, you can let us know which game it's about, and which firewall you are using.

ofcourse if you don't want to post it on an open forum you can IM or email any of the MOD's here who you trust.

[ as I am one of the main network dude's around here, just to let you know I am not that much online the comming 2 days. Although I try to be here atleast twice a day. ]

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll have to figure out which firewall was installed by the configurator. I tried to play Civilization Play the world.

It could be your default WinXP firewall. I presume you have bought the computer pre-configred ?

Usuall your firewall leaves an icon in the system tray, you could check for that. It will also be visible in the Windows services. If you check up on those you can see which firewall, if any, it starts on startup.

Nope ... no icon found in the windows sytem tray. Does this mean there is no firewall? I do remember the guy who configurated the system that he would build in a firewall.

The firewall question, is it just informative or are you having troubles connection and playing online games ?

If you select the properties of your NIC [ network device ], and then choose the advanced tab you can check if the WinXP firewall is enabled.

More details on changing XP firewall settings can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=283673&product=winxp. Check out the video for instructions.

btw, i do not have a taskbar icon even with the xp firewall enabled.

Click on Start/ all programs look down the list for Norton,Symantec or Mcaffee.
If this doesn't help open search for files and programs type in firewall and start the search.
This should find it !
