Delta Force Black Hawk Down - crashes
« on: July 11, 2003, 08:59:43 am »
Hey Peepz,

first of all my specs :

ASUS A7v266 mobo
AMD - Athlon Xp 1400 Mhz proc
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO vidcard
Creative Soundblaster 5.1 audiocard
1x 20 gig (Seagate), 2x 60 gig (MaXtor, Western Digital)
OS XP Pro

as for my problem :

when I try to play DFBHD online, it crashes after about 3 minutes of actual play-time.
Sometimes however, I can play the full 20 minutes or so, online, and then when it starts a new game, it crashes again. Just at the point when it starts to load the textures.
It then shows the blue screen (of death) for a msec and then reboots...
All other games work fine ...like Freelancer, Vice City, Rise of Nations, Pirates of the Caribean. These are all pretty vid-card consuming games...so for me that rules out problems with the vid-card. All the latest drivers for both mobo and vid-card are installed and bios is also up to date. It's not the game itself either, as it works fine on other systems. So I figured that it might be an IRQ issue, but then again the other games should've created the same problem...i guess??? I switched my sound-card into another slot anyway (switching to slot 3 and disabling the audio-feature in the bios creates a free IRQ, on this mobo anyway..) ...just to be sure. Afterwards I checked the device-manager for IRQ-issues, and that looked fine. So nooow.... i'm a bit lost as to what to do next....except buy a new mobo...
Because I heard that some games just don't work on VIA-chipsets, not compatible or sumtin'. A friend of mine has the same mobo, and his freezes on various occaisions with no apparent reason. So it might very well be a mobo-problem. Or maybe there's another kind of hardware-problem/conflict... I give up ...I'll buy all new fresh hardware anyway next month and then i'm sure DFBHD will work fine again...but I'd still like to know what the problem could be with this game as it's been my nightmare for the last 2/3 months....

please....anyone..??

TIA,       Hablah

Attach your dxdiag if you can. Also, as discussed, did you try to update your VIA drivers ?

Run the dxdiag again, on the first tab click Save all info and save the file in txt format.

Hi Hablah,

I would still not rule out your video card. ATI is notorious for breaking as many things as they fix with driver releases and they really don't support games as well as NVidia. Today was the first time I spent some time on ATI's support site in a long time, but there way of handling things does not appear to change much. Instead of supporting older versions of drivers they are instantly unsupported when the latest patch comes out. Nvidia supports many versions of drivers for well over a year before saying they are no longer supported.

Now that I am done venting my frustrations with ATI, I will offer one bit of advice that may or may not help. This is really a hunch. For the latest release of drivers, which you have installed, they say that Unreal Tournament 2003 had a glich that has been fixed in this release. The problem was:

Quote
Setting the display resolution to 1027x768 and running the Unreal Tournament 2003 benchmark with Anti-Aliasing enabled, no longer results in the system rebooting

Here is the link to the fixed problems page:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/Catalyst_35_Release_Notes.html#165432

I would suggest turning off anti-aliasing for the game, if there is an option in the game options screen to do this, or seeing if you can turn off anti-aliasing in the video settings for windows. Like I said it is just a hunch, but it should be easy to try.

Hi number6,

first of all, thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately i had the XFX-Geforce4 ti 4200 installed at first. Just recently I switched to the ATI Radeon 9600, but the symptoms haven't changed a bit. And i tested both cards with or without anti-aliasing enabled (also tested anisotropic on/off). Still the same symptoms. It does seem that ATI indeed have driver related problems for example with the Mobility 9000's in laptops. My laptop for example, which has an Ati mobility 9000 in it, is unable to run DFBHD either. Thing is that a buddy of mine has a similar laptop with the mob9000 in it, and it has the same problem. Only difference in error with my desktop-pc is that the laptops do not reboot, they just shut down the game the moment textures start loading. But for my desktop-pc, if i'm not mistaking, I do have the latest catalyst drivers...i think...(the ATI vidcard was installed like a week ago..) but I will doublecheck anyway.

As for the soundblaster-drivers (Doc Nyar), I still had the old ones...they're now updated but still the same symptoms....

You have been very thorough. I will look into this some more. You say you switched video cards and the problem persists. Did you reinstall the game after switching cards? Sometimes data files get corrupted and you need to reinstall the game, that's why I ask.

I decided to start all over, so.....after re-installing chipset-drivers, soundcard-drivers, and display-drivers ....i re-installed DFBHD, but still the same problem.

Yup.., I checked the link (thanks Doc!) and it does look like my bios needs updating. I always find that tricky stuff to do though. As for the anti-virus and other 'tray-applications', I turned them all off ...during install of drivers/game ...and during play. I also already updated the game to the latest version. I don't suspect the bios-version to be the problem because DF used to run fine on my chaintech, or MSI-mobo's which both are much older boards than my current ASUS-board...so how can a version-update of the bios be the solution then? When i bought the asus-board, it was sold with the latest bios at that time..so DF should've worked without any updating then...right..? I didn't find any specific issues on my current bios version when checking the web for similar problems that others might have with the asus-board/bios........but it's the only thing left unchecked right now so i'll (try to) upgrade to the latest version and let u know.

I think it's the combo of VIA and your BIOS if you'd ask me. And to be honest, if newer BIOS' wern't any problem, they wouldn't need to release any updates :)

Although it ain't Cisco equipment, it still could be buggy ;D

OK, Hablah you have an interesting problem. I have done a little searching around on the ASUS website about your motherboard and I am not sure exactly what version you have. Look at this link :

http://www.asus.com/support/faq/qanda.aspx?KB_ID=81146

There seems to be many revisions of the A7v266. Do you know the exact model number is for your board? It appears that the A7v266-C does not support AGP pro boards. It's worth a look.
