Posted by Chris (admin):

"alley_cat,
By chance, do you have Microsoft Voice Commander? There is a known conflict between BINK (our movie player) and MS Voice Commander. There is a new bink.dll available from www.radgametools.com which fixes the movie crash problem, if that is the cause.

Thanks Chris !

A post from The Tyrants Duncan (do not know what is solves, but here goes):

"A hint (this worked for me with Mech Warrior 4, Starsiege, baldurs Gate 2, and Diablo 2):
If you have got a burner and you have a dell comp, do not USE THE OTHER CD DRIVE! that stupid drive gave me so much trouble.
try installing and running the game on your CD burner.
I have got the biggest piece of poo computer... 797 Pentium 3 Dell that runs slower and less reliable than my 133 Pentium 1 Compaq at least half of the time.
E:BFD works like a charm on this garbage can that some people call a computer."

Nyar, my computer rejected the default adapter option.
but I do play with two chips of RAM (128 MB each), and I remove one of them tomorrow.
BUT if it will solve the problem, than what?
Im not going to stay with only 128MB RAM.
at least we will know what the problem is :P

Does everyone have two CDROM drives?

I have tried disconnectin my second one altogether, but still encountered the same behavior.

Nyar,
My refresh rating did not have a "default"
selection so I tried setting it to 60hz (the lowest).  Same lockup behavior.

The other thing I have tried in the past is setting my desktop to the same resolution & color bit as the game.  That also did not work.

I will post my specs once I have them in a file of some sort.

jeromeku, I went over your specs 6 times, but could not find any similarity between your specs and Alley_cats. Only thing I can tell is that borh BIOS versions are a bit old, but admitting at the same time => The PII400, on which I tested the game, had the same BIOS version as yours and ran okay, so should not be that. DirextX test prove that tHere is no issue there. Im starting to get lost here, especially now you have also tried all the stuff I posted above...  :(

I will keep looking for an answer though, so am not giving up on you, but at this point, I would welcome any support, especially now that 2 people have the exact same problem  :D

Nyar,
I told you It is a really messed up problem.  I even have Westwood stumped, but the only concession they would give me is return the game or send them my computer so they could debug it.  Obviously that is not much of a choice.  Im not going to trust them with my box out of my sight so returning it is my only option with them.  I even suggested they send me a debug exe and I could send them any output it generates.  Of course they will not even do that.   Oh yeah... did I mention that they do not make it very easy to return as well?

jeromeku, Im almost afraid to ask you this, but if you follow the link below, is it the same driver you already have (looked at your report, but could not pinpoint if it was)?

http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/files/w2k_552.cfm

Another question, what drivers did you use to install the soundcard in Win 2000?

Nyar,
Yes that is the correct link.  I have been through the driver reinstall twice at this point.  Matrox uses a package version to specify sets of drivers.  So the numbers are not exactly the same in dxdiag output.  I have also got the latest Graphic BIOS 2.1-35   :).

I went to http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm and downloded the RAD video tools (was that what I was supposed to download?), installed it, but the movies keep freezing.   :(

Microsoft Voice Commander, is a thingy with which you can play the game via voice. So yell to the Devastator to hurry up  :D

At least, that is what I think it is (as far as I know the product).

You know, that fact that the same lockup problem happened on diffrent computers with very diffrent hardware should show that this problem is fixable by Westwood. Also, the fact that this only happens on campiagns and not on the whole game should also show that this is not a driver/hardware problem, since a thing like that could not possibly a hardware problem.

We all agree that It is a weird problem. I  am cracking my brain on what it could be.
Still, it does not explain why it worked for me on 4 different comps => that is what is "bothering" me and keeps me going to look for any possible solution, besides asking WW for help.

We know the problem (well, yours and jeromekus anyway. I do not know who else has the exact same problem as you two have) happens on different system specs. We know there are differences between campaign and skirmish mode. One of those differences has to cause the problem somehow, in combination with any hardware/software you have.

****
Devinoch, Dan, ChrisL, could any of you please post what the differences are between campaign and skirmish mode in terms of what the modes use differently as resource concerning Windows and/or hardware ?
****

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks for posting -x-ray !!

Agreed, the directx does not say enough (yet), but It is the 2nd system where all files are 2000 or older, while the problem comps have some files being from 1999 or even older. I wish someone could post another dxdiag from a system where the game runs fine, and has files from 1999 or older... preferably with Win98 or WinME OS...

alley, it was not my computer but my sisters.
I have no clue why she has all those things, her computer is like a turtle because she has tons of programs running on the backgroung.
If you check, you will find out that she does not have much of free RAM if at all.
anyway Nyar, I will ask a friend of mine to give me his directX files. to check for a friend with Windows 98 or ME?

I think any OS will do, just as long as the game runs fine, that is the only must.

Alley, after going over -x-rays sisters E report, I have noticed shes using a lower driver for her voodoo card:

Alleys driver info:
Main Driver : 3dfx16v3.drv
Version : 4.12.01.0666
Provider : 3dfx

-x-rays sisters driver info:
Main Driver : 3dfx16vb.drv
Version : 4.11.01.1222
Provider : 3dfx Interactive, Inc.

I think -x-rays sister is using driver 1.05 ? If so, -x-ray, is the driver (packed) still on the comp ? If so, is there anyway you can provide it to Alley ? or post the link where you have gotten it from.

soon Im going to my web course where I will have access to the internet, but not to my comp.
so I promise I will install the 1.05 as soon as I get back home.
In the meantime, could you please find me a working link to the 1.05 that is not what Chris gave, and is not this link: http://www.akvasan.co.yu/sr/internet_ftp_drivers_video_voodoo.html since the voodoo 1.05 there is broke.
Thank you in advance.

And btw, the reason his sister is not using the same driver version as mine is because she is using a Voodoo Banshee as far as
I understand, and Im using a voodoo3.

But lets say I install it, how will glsetup (which I have installed) will react?
