I finally did it !
« on: November 06, 2003, 01:56:34 pm »
Well this morning I bought this :
Gigabyte 8KNXP P4 MOBO Dual DDR SATA AGP 8X CH snd
Intel Pentium P4 2.8 Ghz 800FSB mPGA Processor
120MB Maxtor DM Plus9 8Mb cache ATA 133,7200 rpm Drive
Corsair 2 X 256Mb XMS 3200 CAS 2 DDR memory sticks
Lian-Li Aluminium case With neon lights, jetflow case
with slide and four fans.

Can someone advise me on the MOBO is it a good one ?
I wanted the P4C800 deluxe from ASUS but they didn't have it in stock. :(

Here's a write up on Anandtech:

Please read that for a detailed analysis of your board.

It sounds like a really good board to me :) .

Thanks Number 6. I am dying to start building it, but I am taking my time.
It sounds quite complicated about the USB ports.
But I guess I'll find out shortly.lol

Hmm.I have a question. I have in all four case fans, how do I connect these to the MOBO ?
Do I have to daisy chain them or what ?
Also 3.5"HDD convertor plate for the HDD frame how do I fix this in place ? unfortunately the description with the case is not very clear. :(

NB.The case fans are so: one is at the rear of the tower, two at the front of the tower and one on the top of the tower.
On my Mobo I have only one case fan connector ?

Don't think you will be able to connect all of them to your mobo. Mayby it has 1 or 2 power coplinks for casefans but 4. . . .

There is an adapter [ most likely ] to convert a HD power connector to the one your case fans uses. You can daisy chain those.  . .

And there is no need to use the convertor for your HD, just place it in a 3.5"slot of your case and it will be fine. They are below the bigger 5.25" thingies you can put your CDrom in .. .
Expect anything, and life will become boring...

Thanks Gryphon ! I've done that .The weird thing is I bought a boxed P4.
It has a black square of what looks like some kind of foil ?
Do I not need thermal paste with this or do I remove this ?

It doesn't mention it in the manual at all, that came with the Intel processor. :-\

I know the lian-li cases, but never looked into the front i/o, but as far as I know just look in the manual of your mobo where the internal connectors for usb are, they should fit, itīs a reasonable univerale connector. It is with all the moboīs I got. About gigabyte, itīs quite good, havenīt got a lot of experience with them, but thatīs what Iīve heard about it. Havenīt you got a new graphics card by the way? Itīs a nice rig, but too bad itīs to good for your GF4MX

The MOBO has a 10 pin yellow connector and the cable from the front USB ports have single connection plugs.

I couldn't afford a better Graphics card at the moment. :(

Well this is my new comp.

I am at least online with it at last.

I need a little help though ! I have installed my old harddrive as well as the new one.
How can I transfer all my programs and files to my C drive?
Also when I formatted the new drive I made a partition of 20Gb but it didn't use the remaining 100Gb.
This isn't showing up either.

Finally how do I enable USB 2.0 support in Win XP ? ;)

Duh,I also formatted my new hard drive in NTFS and mz old drive is FAT 32, will this make problems ?

Programs canīt be copied, you need to re-install them, and your files can be done with windows explorer

Also when I formatted the new drive I made a partition of 20Gb but it didn't use the remaining 100Gb.
This isn't showing up either.

You need to assign them, try using partition magic for example or FDISK, instead of making a partition of 20gb say 20% or for full use 100%

Finally how do I enable USB 2.0 support in Win XP ? ;)
Install Service Pack 2 sorry must be Service Pack 1

Duh,I also formatted my new hard drive in NTFS and mz old drive is FAT 32, will this make problems ?

No, but try making them both NTFS itīs much better, with Partition Magic you can covert from FAT-->NTFS without data loss

"Install Service Pack 2"
lol, you don't have to enable USB2 support .. . .if you stick something in it the port with choose USB1 or USB2. . depending on the device.. . besides that there is no service pack 2 for WinXP yet .. . ;D

Which USB devices are you using ?

If you go to the Windows file manager / explorer .. is your old hard drive visible. . ie. . your new drive is C where your old will be d or e. . . ?

I think your old e-mails (if they are in outlook) are in the .pst file.

so the only guy around here knowing anything about networks has to figure it out for the both of you ;)

depending on what you want to back up from outlook. . .the *.pst file in your users directory [ or that is where it should be ] holds the specific data for outlook like your contacts, adresses and think folders to. . stuff like that. The *.eml files hold the emails themselfs.

:)

But you must have Service Pack 1 installed, otherwise it wonīt recognize it as USB2.0

OK I've installed the pack.
what is the best way to format my C drive and partition it in WIN XP, I don't have Partition Magic.

My drive C is 120GB I would like to install my OS on a smaller partition and my programs on the rest.
Can someone please advise ? ;)

You can do all in Windows XP setup. Format and partitioning.

I made a mistake and only created a 20Gb partition thinking xp would create the rest automatically.
So I will have to reformat I guess. :(

I don't think you need to reformat. Just startup the XP setup.

When you don't partition the whole disk you don't need to reformat the partition you already formatted and installed to. The problem that can arise now is that your CDROM drive will automatically assign itself to drive D: and if you installed software from drive D: (the CDROM drive) and you create new partitions your CDROM will automatically get bumped to the next available letter and there is nothing you can do about that other than reinstall from the new drive letter. So you should create the new partitions as soon as possible.  For details on how to create additional partitions in Windows XP you should read this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;309000
