CnC Generals freezes in game! Help!
« on: July 16, 2003, 10:19:10 am »
My game freezes in CnC Generals. I already contacted EA and we exchanged several mails on this topic, but still my system freezes. Here's how it goes:

I play several short games on Generals Online. Some time in game or even in Menu the screen freezes. I still can hear my teammate on Teamspeak, but the keyboard and mouse don't react anymore. Rebooting the system is the only way out.

Here's my specs:

Asus Board P4S333 SIS 645 Chipset
SB Live! 5.1 Soundcard
GeForce 4 Ti Nvidia
Intel P4 1.7 Ghz
768MB RAM
80GB 7200rpm HDD
WinXP

Here's the EaEasy-Info:

I also play several other games by EA, eg. MoHAA or Battlefield. All games work without probs. I'm even able to play the whole night on these games. Referring to EA I changed the following things to get rid off the problem, but it didn't work:

1. install IE6 SP1
2. defrag / scandisk
3. re-install the game
4. newest drivers for sound/graphics/chipset
5. shut down all background tasks
etc.

Even formatting the whole sys didn't really change one thing. I'm really frustated. Maybe we could keep on discussing this topic. Temperature can't be the problem, because I already checked temperature directly after rebooting in BIOS and it was ok.

i just downloaded 3dbenchmark03 v. 320:

when i try the game tests it starts with "wings of fury" or somehow. then the game "battle of proxycon" is tested. this second test always fails because of "no suitable display mode was found". the screen freezes for 10 seconds and then i get an error of windows to save my works and restart. the settings of display on winxp change to 4bit color.

Sir, next time you can save the dxdiag as text file and attach it to your post :)

You have 768mb of ram. what dimm modules have you used ? If there's more then 1, I'd suggest you try one at the time.  Let me know if you're able to try that and if so, how it went.

You mean I have to just put in one module at the time playing CnC? I got one 256MB and one 512MB installed on the board right now. You mean I have to put the 256MB away and JUST use the 512 one?

Yes, exactly. Use the 512 first. If the problem still happens, try the 256 (without the 512)...

i tried to use 512 only and it crashed in onlinemenu. the screen freezes and i have to reboot. i won't try the 256 only because i already had this module when cnc crashed first time. it was this problem that made me buy a new module. so i don't have to test it, because i know, that it didn't work.

another thing i tried was to use 3dmark03 by futuremark. when i get to the game tests i get a windows error "gerätefehler" and my graphiks is set to 4bit in windows menu. i have to reboot my win then to get 32bit again. i also deinstalled norton systemworks and norton antivirus, because ea thought it would be another point. but it didn't work. the game crashed after 5 minutes of playing!

what else could i do?

It might also be cooling. Have you tried playing with the case off ?

EDIT

I am sorry, I see that your direct X output shows version 9.0a. Your easy report confused me. I am going with your DirectX output so I take back what I say in this post about 3DMark as far as it not running the "battle of proxycon" correctly.

**************************************************************

Part of the problem you are having with Futuremark is that you don't have Direct X 9 installed and the "battle of proxycon" demo needs version 9 installed. I would not use 3Dmark as a troubleshooting tool anyway. Could you please repost and attach your dxdiag output as a ".txt" file?   When you are posting there is a "attach" field with a browse button:

I have circled the area I am talking about from the post screen. Click on the browse button to browse the folders on your computer and select the dxdiag output file usually "dxdiag.txt".

OK, after looking at your dxdiag output I am going to suggest that you revert back to the 40.72 drivers for your graphics card since that is the last WHQL certified driver for your card. The latest driver is only certified for the FX family of Geforce cards. You have a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 so you will want this driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_40.72

Make sure you pick the driver on the right of that screen (The XP version not the Win 2000 version).

That may also fix your 3DMark problem. Let us know if it works or you tried the 40.72 drivers already.

Hi again!

I just downloaded the 40.72 drivers and I will test them tonight. Could there be any further possibilities? I already checked the temperature and phoned my computer shop. They told me that such temp is ok and I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I attached my actual dxdiag for you!

Another question: How to de-install the old (newer) driver? Do I have to use D-Destroyer? Where to find it?

I still would try to play with the case off (and if you can, have an extra fan blow cool air inside the case).

The reason I ask is because you've seem to have tried a lot, but still suffer the problem. I know for a fact that heat can cause your pc to lock up.

Yes, but if it would be a heating problem, wouldn't this also influence the all-day use of my computer? Wouldn't other games like Battlefield crash if it was a problem of heat? With my processor, which temperature would be ok?

And still please help me with those drivers. How to uninstall them?

Thanks for posting the DxDiag output file as an attachment.

As far as installing the drivers, you can just install the Nvidia drivers. You don't need to uninstall the currently installed drivers.

Hi!

I've just installed the 40.72 drivers. Here's my new dxdiag. I also reinstalled Directx9. I also start Asus PCProbe in the background to get my CPU temperature.
I'm testing Generals right now!

Hi!

I've just tested Generals with 40.72 drivers. Some minutes after starting a game the game crashes. I've also measured the temperature. In between 5 minutes the temperature raises from about 43°C (109°F) up to 59°C (138°F). Is this normal? Maybe it's a problem of temperature. The normal WinXP temperature while writing this post is round about 40°C.

Sounds like you are running a little hot. My system usually runs around 120 F.  You may want to try Doc's suggestion about opening the case to cool it off a little.

I already tried to play with case open. Eventhough with opened case I reach around 138°F. When I play Counterstrike I reach 129°F at maximum. What else could I do?

Is your case fan working? The fan I mean is the one inside your power supply. Also check the fan on the CPU to make sure it is working correctly, it should be spinning at a certain RPM. That tool you are using should be able to tell you the CPU temp and fan speed. If not your BIOS may monitor fan speed and CPU temp as well as case temp.

If all your fans are running fine I would look at the way you have ribbon cables running through the case and try and see if they are blocking airflow through your case. If that is all good, then you may need to add fans to your case to increase airflow. When you opened the case did you try getting a regular house fan and blowing the air directly on your exposed case? That should lower the temperature a little.

I got one casefan working to get airflow into the case. The on-chip fan is working "fine", too. Asus PC Probe tells me that the fan is working with at least 3600 rpm and maximum 7000 rpm. It's always something between.

But could this be a reason for my problem?

I think the minimum you want it running at is 3000 RPM, but it's OK if the speed falls below for a brief second on your monitor program. If it is running at a slower RPM a lot that is definitely bad and you probably need to replace the CPU fan.

I think your PC definitely has a cooling problem. I am just not sure where. Did you try putting a fan next to your PC case and blowing some air on it? Also, what's the temperature in the room where this PC is running? It should be in the low 70's Farenheit.

Now I've tested something new:

I've completely opened my case's side and I put a homefan (standing and powerful) next to it (about 15 cm). The On-Chip fan is absolutely free working without any wires around or in front of it. I'm able to push down temperature in normal computer use to 37°C (96°F). In game (NOT ONLINE, SKIRMISH ONLY!) I am able to keep temperature for several minutes under 131°F (55°C). It's roundabout 55°C, sometimes 54°C. Without fan it would be around 60°C as I said before. But suddenly the game freezes again. The last temperature measured was 55°C (131°F). The room temperature is roundabout 27°C (80°F). But this temperature is just a guessed one! It could also be -+5°C. I'm living under the roof and it's been about 35°C (95°F) the last days.

Well the hot room environment explains the higher than normal temperatures. It really helps if the room is cooler because all the fans are doing is blowing hot air on the already hot components.  If you can't get the room cooler you may have to be more aggresive with your cooling like a liquid cooling system and a couple extra internal fans. I am not certain that the overheating is the problem, but it sure does not help.  It's possible that one or more of your components are already damaged by the heat. Do you overclock anything in your computer? That is known to cause stability problems and to cause hardware to fail. Was this a custom built machine or did it come pre-buit? If pre-built, where did you get it? Sometimes OEM venders overclock the Video cards to get optimal performance for gaming.

Hi again!
My computer was self-build by a friend of mine who really knows what he does. The graphics-card was bought later and I put it into my computer by my own. A collegue of mine who also plays Generals just rebooted directly after gaming Generals and he checked his temperature (He's got 156°F (AMD2000+) on CPU). I do not overclock my computer. It's a real 1.7 Ghz and I do not overglock the graphics. I don't think there are damaged parts, because all other games (ViceCity, Battlefield etc.) work fine...

156 Farenheit does not sound good at all  :o . Well I hear what you are saying and I agree that if you are only having problems with Generals it must be a configuration issue. It sounds like you have tried quite a bit configuration wise.  I will read up on your motherboard a bit and post if I find anything. This is really strange.  We will keep tring to help, but it is getting to the point where logic will not prevail in my requests. It's got to be something strange causing your problem.
