Very irregular system heating
« on: July 21, 2003, 08:42:15 pm »
Hi guys I'm new here, seems like a nice community.

Now to the problem  ;)

My computer generates heat like a goddamn oven!
the temp of my cpu has reached up to 48C(!!!!) according to Sandra and the hardware monitor in the BIOS. and this is while surfing the net and being on for a few hours only.
I think it also what causes the errors I get with Generals, serious errors and technical difficulties errors.
I've got two extra fans on the case.

My Specs are:
P4 1.7
VIA P4VXASD2 chipest motherboard.
GeForce2 MX 400 64 MB
SB Live! 5.1
2 X 256 DDR PC 2700

Any suggestions on what might causing the problem or what to do to decrease the heat will be greatly appreciated!

Try taking the pc case off and if you can, have a external fan blow cool air inside the pc.. that should at least take care of your heat problem. However, 48C isn't that hot though for a processor...

As far as your error in Generals goes, what programs do you have installed ?

I'm sorry I didn't understand...

You meant in what other programs I get errors?

If you did so I also get in Rise of Nations and Vice City...

And I also have frequent restarts for no reason...I think it's caused by the overheating.

Shuold I replace the CPU fan eventhough it's spinning(maybe it has no effect..?), add a cooling system, ot just like you said, put an external fan beside it? what option will be the best??

Thanx ;)

I meant next to games, what else do you have installed (anti virus program, any cd burner software, ect ect) ?

And before replacing anything, I would try a external fan first.

Be sure to let me know how it went !

Welcome to the community Riqtam!

Like Doc said your temperature is fine. It's hard to say what the problem is without some more information. It seems a few people posting in this forum are having problems with their BIOS not being set properly or incorrect drivers being installed. Could you please attach a copy of your dxdiag output as a text attachment in another post. That way we can see your driver configuration and if there are any problems with your DirectX configuration.  I would also look at your BIOS settings and write down any you are not sure about and post that here as well.

Your video card driver is a little old. You should upgrade to 40.72 drivers:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_40.72

You might also want to look into upgrading your soundcard drivers as well:

http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download2.asp?centric=107&maincat=11&os=10&subcat=16

I would do one update at a time and then test the game to see if there is an improvement. Start with video drivers and if that does not fix the problem then go to the sound card drivers. If the problem is still around then maybe your BIOS settings are the problem.

Try lowering your desktop resolution to 1024x768, 16bit default refresh rate..

I know about my Video Card drivers, wanted a WHQL certified coz sometime ago I had problems with the uncertified 40 series. that's why I use the 30 something which is also WHQL certified..

As far as the souncard concern, I'll check that out.

And how do I know what's the best configuration for my BIOS?
What can possibly wrong?
I mean, I'm not as n00b as I sound lol, I don't screw around with things that might harm my PC, and the BIOS settings are at their default's I think.

The only reason I mentioned the BIOS settings is because someone else who was having a problem had a BIOS setting that was worng. I think it was other than auto (optimal?) and changing it to the default fixed the problem. If you are confident that the BIOS is setup right that's fine then. As far as the 40.72 drivers are concerned, they are WHQL certified (it is the most current set of drivers for Nvidia Geforce 2,3,4 that is WHQL certified).  So I still recommend going to that version of driver.

Glad to hear that only a fan was needed to fix the problem.

Hhhmmm....

Fellas, restarts still occurs without any reason...
The fan only solved the generals issue, which is good but not enough as long as restarts keep occuring, any suggestions on what might it be?

Could it be it's keeping your system cool for a longer time but heat eventually kicks in ?

It might if the pc is standing against a wall or something (preventing the air to go through the case).

Ok, I have updated my nVidia drivers and restarts still occurs.

It can't be that it keeping the PC cool for a long time and heat eventually wins coz it sometimes restarts just after turning on the computer.

And it has enough space to circulate the air...

Have you done a memory test? I had the similar problems with an other system of me. In the end it was the memory, one of my banks was malfunctioning. Download Memtest and try.
