Killer Heatsink!
« on: July 23, 2003, 01:21:28 am »
Since a few people have been complaining about heat related problems in their systems I thought some of you may enjoy this review:

http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/thermalright/slk900u/p1.html

Is that one huge heat sink or what?

I thought the overclocking temperatures were quite low with that baby. I guess it should be considering it's made of copper.

I thought of buying the one pictured below ones

Although I need 2 of them just for one PC . . and spending another 120 Euro's on CPU cooling, as the Intell ones also came with the processor in the Intell boxed version is not really at the top of my to-do list. So never bought other fans for any of my CPU's. Although I have been playing with Novell 6.5 Netware for the most part of today and it reminded me that the northbrigde get's a little bit over used with that, giving me 2 temp warnings in one day .. . I didn't even know what the noice was at first ;) . . running my case at about 15 deg. above normal was the case .. .so I'm really thinking about activly cooling that.  But then I only use it to test Netware on if from time to time [ E-directory is running on Win2K servers for day-to-day use here ] so then again. . . why bother for just those times it's really hot here and I'm trying out Novell . ....

Anyway, that thing is big Number6 .. . and it's pictured even without the fan ...

The one you show looks pretty big too!

Are you telling me that Novell Netware actually heats your system up? I guess that is with a lot of network traffic.

I saw it in a store ones [ the heatsink I pictured ] and are excually doubting it I can fit 2 of them on one motherboard relativly next to eatchother ...

and yes, with the same computer that I am at now using Win2K ADV server .. using it with Novell 6.5 Netware I got a verry heated northbridge. The 2 CPU's kept there usualy temp. . the northbridge however did not. . . it has been the first time I noticed it I must admit .. due to the warning my motherboard gave me..I doubt it was the network trafic. It has been just ones my hard disks got really hot by that. The RAID array got overheated when using almost the full bandwith for about 40 minutes or so. [ could be more I'm not shure anymore ] I switched it off before any damage might occure. . .and added an extra fan in the case. Never had any problems with my northbridge getting really hot. And Don't think it was network traffic causing it. As this computer is the secundairy server .. . the primairy should handle all the requests before this one get's used, and as most of the things I did with it where just playing .. . . nothing llinked to the network or internet was routed to this [ the Novell one ] computer. Mayby just a secundairy DNS or DHCP server .. directory sharing and routing is handled by other servers. So I doubt it was related to network trafic.

After I changed the hard drives from the Novell one back to the Windows ones I realised that I gave double the amount of memory on my grafics card to the Novell install programm .. .. .not really that smart [ I always forget which amount is in which PC :-\ ] although if that has been the cause of the higher temp. . .

Oh, I see. The northbridge is getting hot from all the bus activity because of the non-stop disk activity. These newer motherboards buses are running at much higher clock speeds than systems I am used to.

I might have been a bit unclair in the previous post. . .
The previous time my system got overheated was related to tomuch diskactivety, could have been the northbridge with it I didn't specifically look at it back then. The heating now was stricktly to the northbridge. Not even using the RAID controler for Novell. . . although the disk activety was verry high throughout the day. . network traffic with this computer wasn't.
Could have been to much transfering on the disk though .. the room I'm in shouldn't get to hot although it is quite warn outside .. . and disk activety has been verry high at some points. . . didn't think of it untill now .. or didn't realise it. :)

The wierd thing, . . I ones talked about server motherboards with a friend of mine. The main question are active coolers for the northbridge really needed ?. He obviously thought there is no need for that, I was and still are partially in doubt. The board in this one [ nor any other pc I own ] doesn't have an active northbridge cooler. . .And now I'm thinking It can't do any harm with some motherboard models. ..

I am sure you were clear, I guess I responded too quickly :)

I am in total agreement with you about installing active cooling for the Northbridge chip as well. They run a lot hotter nowadays.
