yep, it's the same guy who asked the question about the Video Card :'(. See next post.

Ok, here we go:

my RAM slot is 2 DIMM slots

I have 126-128MB RAM

I have Windows XP

other specs @ attachment

does this mean i have to select the memory with DIMM? and if so, can you tell me what DIMM is? and other there
variations of it?

and how many memory should i have? I play games mostly.

if I do, are there any drawbacks or changes i'm suppose to make other than opening a case?

DIMM, short for dual in-line memory module, a small circuit board that holds memory chips. A single in-line memory module (SIMM) has a 32-bit path to the memory chips whereas a DIMM has 64-bit path. Because the Pentium processor requires a 64-bit path to memory, you need to install SIMMs two at a time. With DIMMs, you can install memory one DIMM at a time.

You need a DIMM, SIMM are last use in the first Pentium 1 systems (EDO RAM, FP RAM were SIMM´s).

Best for you is adding a DIMM of 512mb, WinXP and most games use up a lot of memory and 512mb ain´t that expensive anymore.

Be aware of the memory speeds your motherboard can handle.

the speed of my memory board?

well...

Front side bus properties

Bus Type: Intel GTL+
Bus width: 64-bit
Real Clock: 100 Mhz
Effective Clock: 100 Mhz
Bandwitdh: 800 MB/s

is that info enough? or not enough?

if it is, can my motherboard handle 512MB?

so i'm thinking of getting 512MB DIMM or 256MB if the 512's not available. So I should get the memory with:

512MB DIMM

^is that all i'm looking for? or is there anything else i'm suppose to look at?

Do you think it'll work well with the specs I have?

yeah, i'm kinda paranoid.

There are various DIMM modules. You have DDR266, DDR333, DDR400, ect. I would check what's installed now and make sure the new module matches your current one (if you leave it in that is).

it's a PC133 SDRAM

so basically, i'm suppose to get 512MB DIMM PC133 SDRAM right? I have one memory slot left.

@Doc:
if you checked it dxdiag you would have seen that is has a intel 810 chipset, it only comes with SD-Ram

@Mineral:
Yes, take 512mb PC133 memory, it will work perfectly

so now I know which memory to pick, now comes the second question (ok, not the 2nd question).

if I do have 512MB RAM stick inserted in my computer, will it be added with the current?

as in 512 + 128= 740MB of memory.

and will extra memory increase in performance despite having 32MB of video memory with 900Mhz?

Running Win Xp you should notice a significant boost in speed, especially loading web pages.

If you need more free lessons, ask  ;D

@ mineral:

With the extra DIMM you´ll get an enourmous boost under WinXp. Xp needs at least 128mb to run a little bit decent, in your case those 128mb are shared with your graphics. With the new DIMM WinXp doesn´t need your hard drive anymore for swapping files and games performance will dramaticaly rise. Most current games need about 200mb free memory to run good

Now comes the third question:

the installation:

do I simply open the case, then insert the RAM stick and close it with the computer adapting to the change automatically?

If the memory is supported by your motherboard, and compatible with existing memory. . make shure the power is of when you preform that operation. . . and yep .. it will be as simple as that. :)
Expect anything, and life will become boring...

not to scare you. . although you could damage it if it's fitted wrongly in the socket. Not all pinns connected, with a obstuction  somewhere between it. . things like that. Although if you put it in gently, and make shure it's pressed down all to the botom that change is very small.

No serious. . make shure you know what you are doing and it will go just fine. :)

Open the case, look where your memory banks are, they wont be difficult to recognize, mostly near the top right of your mobo. Your memory will fit only one way so put it between the white clambs at each side of the bank and press the DIMM down. You need to press a bit hard at each end, when it is inserted correctly then the white clambs are standing right up. Make sure all pins are inserted all the way in, close your case and boot up.

When you look at the 2 pictures below, you can notice that the memory slot has a small obstuction slightly to one end of the slot. This will correspond with your memory slot.

The white clamps need to be put in upright position. If you can't do that the module isn't correctly placed.

Ok, i'm almost done, about buy more memory:

can you install it with the motherboard still in place? the pictures looked as if the mother board was out of the computer?

yeah, countless questions are being asked as if it has no end.  ;D

Those pics were indeed taken when the motherboard was slided out of the case. It's no problem if you leave the motherboard in the case.

ok, another question  :o

Bus Type: Intel GTL+
Bus width: 64-bit
Real Clock: 100 Mhz
Effective Clock: 100 Mhz
Bandwitdh: 800 MB/s

and the memory i'm about to get is

DIMM PC133 SDRAM

I heard that 133 is the clock speed, but the real clock and effective clock is 100, will it matter?

don't think it will. If your memory is more then the bus speed it will adapt and run with a lower clockspeed... .

k, so I simply:

open case

put the memory in the last slot with the card clamped tight

and cased closed

right?

and what are some cautions about it? I know static will inflict damage.

Touch something grounded first, before taking the DIMM by hand. And PC133 memory on a PC100 bus won´t matter, memory is backwards compatible with busspeeds

 :-X :-\OK, another question:

my friend says that my computer may not be able to handle 740MB of RAM. My computer is Deminsion 2100, and doubts it'll be able to use the 740 MB, he suggest that I remove the 128 and use the 512. Any suggestion?

one more thing, i'm paranoid again:

using the AIDA32, I went into the motherboard-chipset section, I found out that

Memory Slots-
 DRAM slot #1: 128MB (PC133 SDRAM)

yet when I looked at the Motherboard-motherboard section:

RAM slots-
2 DIMM

what the heck does this mean?! I'm confused

I'm currently going to get 1 512MB PC133 SDRAM
is there anything  I need to know more?

Are there such things as DIMM  512MB PC133 SDRAM and DRAM 512MB PC133 SDRAM

or just only 512MB PC133 SDRAM??
 :P :-[  :-X :-\

Your friend needs to shut up, the intel 810 chipset supports up to 1,5gb of RAM, so just put the 512 along with the 128 and it will work perfectly

DRAM says you need DIMM´s as RAM (not SIMM´s)

ok, I got a problem, it didn't work:

I opened the case

put the memory in, thats when there were some obstacles, the clamp wouldn't clamp in easily, so I had to put some pressure at the end so it'll clamp

I closed it

I connected everything back in

and when I turned the power on, nothing happens, the computers on but I don't see anything in the moniter.

By the way, I removed the 512 Memory and the computer's working correctly...

Hmmm. you mean it only works with the 128 Mb sdram stick installed ?

Not the 512Mb ? (it is quite usual for the tabs on the memory slots to be a bit stiff ) ;)

Just a note occasionally right click on this forum page and select refresh, otherwise the pages won't update, and you will miss IM's  ;)
