Explorer.exe (still) crashes
« on: December 07, 2003, 09:35:16 pm »
Ok, I have a problem with explorer.exe and my system recources.

Explorer.exe crashes very often, usually in less than 5 seconds after the computer has fully loaded Windows. I don't know what's causing it, and reinstalling everything only works for about two days.

Secondly, I have a problem with my system recources; after a reboot I only have 39% available, and it keeps dropping, resulting in very slow and stuttering performance.

The strange thing is that I can run MGS: 2 Substance perfectly without slowdown or Zero Hour, Kazaa and MSN at the same time, without any slowdown at Zero Hour.
It seems to be affecting the PC me when I'm not using Microsoft programs. It usually slows down on Internet Explorer or MSN, especially after an explorer.exe crash.

It's a PC run by Windows 98 SE, I've heard that switching to Windows 2000 or XP wil (probably) solve the system recources problem, but will it solve the explorer.exe crashes? Is there any way to solve them with Win 98 SE, or is there some underlying, hardware problem?

I've been at PC Pitstop by the way, and the only problems I had there were a ping of 157 ms and low recources.

Any help is greatly appreciated, because this situation is driving me crazy!

When did you defragment your hard drive last ?
It sounds to me that you may have spyware on your computer, especially if you use Kazzaa.
Download adaware from lavasoft.com and run it on your comp. if you have anti virus software run that too.

Windows 98 SE is really not up to the task of multitasking with the apps of the day so an upgrade to Win XP may well solve your problems.

although I agree with Number6. If you can upgrade to WinXP or Win2K.

I have no Spyware on my system, at least both Adaware or the PC Pitstop test detected any, I'm using one of those Spyware free versions of Kazaa. I have 512 MB RAM and I defragged both drives yesterday, so that shouldn't be the problem either.

I guess I'll try upgrading to Windows 2000 then, I prefer that to Windows XP.

Why do you prefer that? Xp is just a newer version of 2000 with another layout. I think you´ll be better off on the long-term with Xp

I heard 2000 will give you less problems than XP will, with user-rights and all... At least people I know and who have XP always complain about those user-rights.

And is there a way to change the XP-look? The original one looks, well... ugly.

You can change the WinXP look so it sill appear simular to Win2K. I think user right arnt'all that different in WinXP then they are in Win2k. The way users are managed is slightly differtn in the default XP look. And can be a bit confusing sometimes because Windows doesn't say what it is doing and such.

Win2K is not the same as WinXP. The have a lot of simular feauters and look in a way more or less the same. Although WinXP's network stack is inferieur to Win2K's. WinXP can handle games better then Win2k. .and officially WinXP is a consumer OS and not a company OS. Which is also giving it other features.

Ok then, I'll get a dutch version of XP. You can just install it on top of Windows 98 SE, right?

Yeah, but that means installing everything else again as well... But if that's better, I'll do that. I don't wanna risk strange crashes like these again.

Well right off the bat you want to start using NTFS instead of FAT32 so you have to reformat to use the new filesystem anyway.  It's best to make a completely clean break when upgrading.

Ok, so three questions:

- I will be able to use my old FAT-32-files again on a NTFS drive, right?

- Is there an advantage to the English version, or is a Dutch version of Windows XP the same?

- Will I have to de-partition my hard drive for the transition from FAT-32 to NTFS?

If the Dutch and English versions are the same, I'll probably get I Dutch one, and if the files are usable and I need to de-partition, I can burn My Documents on a CD

Yes
Not much difference I believe
You will only have to reformat the partition that your OS is on.
Probably C:\

During install of XP you can format your drive to NTFS

Yeah, but if I reformat to NTFS, will it reform my D: drive (same disk, 2 partitions) to the NTFS-format? If so, My Documents aren't safe on D: and I'll have to burn them on a disk

Depending on which drive you are going to format all contents of that drive will be lost as a result. Formatting leaves the partition table intact  .. in this case it will just change the partition from FAT to NTFS. Making it a little bit smaller in size [ MB ] when you have formatted it with NTFS.

The file system hass no effect to the files on it.

Think the ony big differance between the Dutch version of WinXP and the origional Englisch one if that the Dutch one is a little bit bigger in size. [ just a gues in some way, and just talking about 5 MB's or so ]. That and the fact that the language is different.

Xp will only format the partition on which you install it, your d-partition will remain as it is.

Won't that give me any problems, a FAT-32 and a NTFS partition on the same hard disk?

(I know I'm asking a lot, I just want to be sure)

But in that case, I'll just move the 'My Documents' folder to D: (I need it for school)

After you installed XP, transfer the fat32-->NTFS, it´s faster & more reliable, with Partition Magic you can do it with ease and without lose of data

I don't have much confidence in that  :(
I mean, Sinterklaas (the Dutch version of Santa Claus) wasn't really active this year either...
Aah well, I have to go downtown tomorrow anyway  :)

You say it wrong, in America you got Santa Claus, but here in holland we have next to Santa Claus (25+26 of december) another guy, we call Sinterklaas (5 december), there is no english name for him, but the dutch word for him sounds a lot like the english Santa Claus. but they ain´t the same. With ´sinterklaas´ we can put our shoe somewhere near the chimney. Then his helpers, called ´zwarte pieten´ will climb down the chimney (like Santa Claus) and put a present in it.  So it´s double fun here in Holland with presents  :P

Windows XP has been installed, everything is running smoother than before, but now my C:\ partition is too small. I olny have 350 MB left, it's a 4 GB partition and with Windows 98 I had more than 1 GB free, but this 350 MB is without temporary internet files...

So, is there anyway too enlarge the C: partition by, say, 2 GB after the installation? Or will I have to reinstall everything again?
