If you have any lockup issues, please post here. Make sure that you post also the EAsy_EA.txt file ! Besides this file, a summary of what you have tried so far.

Im trying to get all issues under one roof.
Im one person who has not got any issues with the game, but will post my EAsy_EA.txt file as well for reference if needed.

Devinoch, Dan, and anyone else involved from WW, can I please ask your support on this and provide us with some help and/or update every now and then ? => Thanks in advance !

If the game freezes, or turns black, try the following (do not know if it will work, but if so, It is your video card which is causing the problem):

Win 98, right click on the desktop and select proporties. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
Click the Adapter tab. Use the Refresh Rate box on the Adapter tab to manually
reset the video refresh rate for your monitor. To do this, follow these steps:
On the Adapter tab, click Adapter Default in the Refresh Rate box.
Click OK. If you are prompted to test the setting, click OK.
If the setting appears to function properly, click Yes.
If the setting does not function properly, click No.

If the above does not work, follow below:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.
Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting). Click OK, and then click Close.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

See if it does anything...

Actually no. But Im not going to put my monitor refrsh rate on It is default. It looks crappy that way and no game worth it for me to use my comp that way.
I am going to try what you suggested about the hardware acceleration.

If the game locks up when you start it, try to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, follow these steps:
Restart the computer.
Insert the CD-ROM for the game. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program from starting automatically.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER
cd-rom:setupdirectxdxsetup.exe
where cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
Click to clear the Direct3D Hardware Acceleration Enabled check box.
Click OK.

**************

Verify that the correct version of the Ddraw.dll file is installed, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type ddraw.dll.
In the Look In box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
In the list of found files, verify that the Ddraw.dll file is installed in the WindowsSystem folder, and then rename any copies of the Ddraw.dll file that are not in the WindowsSystem folder. (make it something that you can remember easily, so when it does not do you any good, or when something else stops working, you are able to change it back !)

**************

1) I tried the thing you said in the control panel with the Hardware accelaration, restarted, but when I tried to open the game, I got an error ("this program had performed...."), so I had to put it back to max and now it at least starts.
2) I think you meant to type "dxdiag", not "dxsetup"
3) Im not going to disable hardware accelration through Directx diag from the above reason.
4) The game requires as minimum requirement a video card which supports Hardware acceleration. That must mean something...  ;)

My problem, it that almost each time when a movie is being played in the game (wether its a movie from the hard drive or from the cd), it plays aobut 1/2 sec of the movie and than lock ups. Doesnt always happen, but most of the time it does. I already tried reinstalling the game.
It doesnt only happen on specific movies, but on all.

Well, my problem is that not only do the game freeze, but the movies freeze too. Even the ones on my HD.
*We tried cleaning task bar programs
* tried freeing memory
* tried disabling the onbaord video card
* could not do so completely, but most likely It is not the cause of the problem.
* Tried using the x3dfx drivers, which only made the freezing worse
* tried updating to Windows media player 7.1
* covered the fact that most of the time the game freezes when Im scrolling
* covered the fact that the movies do not completley freeze, cause after I use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to exit the game, I hear the sound of the movie for a sec and than the game completly closes
* covered the fact that autoexec.bat and config.sys do not really play a role here
* covered the fact that the problem is 99% not because of the fact that I have an hebrew OS
* wondered if things such as -c and +w are case sensitive
* tried using +w and -c without any luck
* made sure nothing was wrong with dxdiag
* got the following additional info on my comp:
Vendor/model of motherboard: houston1 2.0 ondor (this is what my comp tech support told me)
Chipset: Intel 810E PCI Chipset
Bus type: PCI V 2.10
L2 cache: 256KB Advanced Transfer Cache (ATC)
BIOS name: AMI 686-HiFlex-Bios V03.16
BIOS Date: 03/22/00
* Got the fact that I cant get the "close application" dialog box when the game freezes, but I can get it to appear when the movies freeze
* got the fact that only Emperor is the game causing me any problems (I have many games, many of which are using 3d, amny of which are using Directx, such as B&W or Startopia)
* got the fact that 99% It is not a cd (in my case DVD) problem, since, like I said, the problem also happens on movies that play from the HD
* I have a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI 16 mb vram, have no "real" AGP slot since I have an onboard video card which presumably use it
* found that the -ALTVID (case sensitive) option does nothing for me, at least when It is all in big letters like I wrote it here
* tried using +v in the shortcut, did not do squat (is it case sensitive too?)
* Gave the following reasons why Im not going to use a crack that will disable music and videos:
A) The game without music and movies is just like the warez version, and I oculd have just download it (I have ADSL), but I did not. I bought the game full money, and I excpect to get what I deserve
b) If you will notice well, you will see that when those short movies who introduce the houses play, the CD rom is not being accessed. And Im not one of those who have the game freezing every time the music track changes. The music tracks change without a problem. And when the game freezes, the music also stops.

I guess you probably understand nothing from what I just wrote, and even if you do, this is not the whole picture, so I ask you (especially themods: Dan, Devinoch and Chris) please please first read all my thread about my problem here:
http://messagebrd.westwood.ea.com/boards/emp/english/Forum1/HTML/007109.html
thanks.

And about verifying the ddraw.dll, I had 2 copies of it: one in windowssystem and another in windowssysbckup. Meaning that it is a backup. I checked both files version (right click-proprties-version) and they were both 4.08.00.0400, which means that even if (big if) windows uses the one in that other directory, it is still the most updated version of the file.

Below info is only concerning SBLive! users !!
If the game stops responding, try the following (make sure you have updated Liveware! to the latest version !):

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Multimedia.
On the Audio tab, click Advanced Properties under Playback.
On the Performance tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left. Click OK, and then click OK again

Close Control panel.

I saw someone saying that the game locked up for him only on the campaign. So fat, I only played skirmish once, and it did not freeze, but that was a rather short game. Im going to try playing a skirmish game again (I will try to make it longer this time) and tell you what the results are.
Whish me good luck  8)

i tried all the solutions above but none of them worked.  :(
btw, Im having the problem both on campaign and skirmish.
but maybe i can direct you to the specific problem i have. I noticed that when i play the game after i restart my computer it can work 5-10 min, and when i play the game having many programs running (i.e. explorer, icq, winamp etc.) the game locks up after 1-2 min of playing.
more over, i can tell when the game is going to freeze. appearantly, the game starts to have "jumps", a few minutes before It is totally lock up. so it may really be the leaking memory problem.
i hope i guided you a little more in this... mystorious problem.
try to solve it now  :)

O.k. I just played a Skirmish game. I was Ordos and the comp was a medium defensive Harkonen. The game lasted between 30-40 mins (not sure) where usually (I repeat, USUALLY) the game will freeze on me, and it did not! I got to see the harkonen base destroyed and the Victory logon display without needing to load any of the skirmish saves I saved so many times (it becomes a habit when your game freezes so often).
So again, I can not say 100% that it freezes only on campaigns (never played multiplayer and have no intention ondoing so in the near future, at least until the freezing is solved), but this game lasted long enough and did not froze!  :D
btw, nyar, what advice did you mean?

yep, 30 min it is. I played right after I told you Im going to and wishing luck.
I did not even need to restart my comp in order to get a free ram. Which tells you that the RAM and background program are not necessarily the problem.
If (big if) the problem is only in the campaigns, than this is something that Westwood can fix for usre in a patch, am I correct?

jeromeku, I really would like to see your specs, and what language your OS is (just for the heck of it). As you and Alley seem to have both the exact same problem, may be tHere is some smililarity between both specs you are having...

Devinoch, Dan, any suggestions why the game locks up in campaigne mode and not in skirmish ? What are the diffrences ?

If It is two, try the game with one removed, if the problem persists, try removing the other (of course with the first one back in again).

Let me know.

I just finished playing a skirmish game that took me 45 mins. No restart also. Meaning that this one was even after my last game without restart + I had bilions of programs running before (such as IE) so westwood or anyone else: THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH MEMORY OR BACKGROUND APPS. Im now 99% sure I only have lock-ups on campaigns.
And I still have the movies freezing  :( I never had such problem with RA2 or Tiberian Sun movies.

When using the "Hardware Acceleration slider", try different positions on the bar, probably a light slide to the left already might work...

Another thing, which I know It is been posted before, but here goes again: Try to reduce CD-ROM caching and prevent read-ahead activity:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Performance tab, click File System.
On the CD-ROM tab, note the current settings, and then move the Supplemental cache size slider to the Small position.
In the Optimize access pattern for box, click No read-ahead.
Click OK, and then click Close.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

If these steps do not successfully resolve the issue, repeat the steps to restore the settings to the original values noted in step 4, and then proceed to the next method.

Nyar,
As I said before EASY_EA.txt file suggests nothing cuz it does not work properly in Windows 2000.  99.9% of the information is not even there.  It was probably written with the 9x series in mind.

Maybe sysinfo or dxdiag would be better than easy_ea?

BTW - Im running Advanced Server... the English version.  Im in the US  :).
