: Forum Updates and Status
: number6 June 18, 2003, 04:43:11 PM
I want to start this thread to let the users know what's going on with the forum. Right now we have a problem with Uploading Attachments that we hope to fix soon. So for now no uploading anything. Usually what we would use the uploads for is to allow users to upload attachments of their Direct X Diagnostics file if they are experiencing driver issues or if a person wishes to upload a picture for others to view.

Other than the upload issue the only immediate update coming will be a "Rules" page which will spell out forum etiquette and a FAQ page that will help users be more forum savvy. Thanks for coming to the site.

Testing attachment status

Well it looks like attachments are working. All users feel free to use this feature if you want. Please try to limit the size of attachments since we have limited space. Once we get over a certain amount uploaded I will archive old attachments to an offline server.

Enjoy the dilbert cartoon I have uploaded.

Forum Rules have been added!

All members please read the rules. Simply click the button in the top menu on any screen labeled "Forum Rules".

Thanks. ;D

Added a faq menu item. This is a first crack at the faq. I copied this basically from the Fed2k forum because I liked the one they made there, so any kudos go to  Gobalopper (http://www.dune2k.com/forum/?action=viewprofile;user=admin).  Thanks Gob!

Hidden text does not work. There must be a mod for this function. Do we want hidden text?
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 June 20, 2003, 11:39:10 PM
Hidden Text now works!.

[hide]
If you can see this when you move the mouse over the hidden area hidden text now works.  :o

I like this mod that Gobalopper did on www.dune2k.com/forum/ (not accepting new members for now :() :

Maybe I will mess around on my home system and try and get the flags in the Who's online display. I think it's cool.

Members please update the member map in your profile so we can see your country flag when  post and it  may also be seen in who's online.

Upgraded to version 1.5.4 of YaBBSE today due to suggestions on the YaBBSE forums. I don't want there to be any security problems with the site.

Added a couple more mods:

Advanced IM (Members now have a limit on number of IM's and interface has improved)
MemberGroup Colors (More member group color options)

Number6: Go here (http://boardmod.yabbforum.com/templates/templatevault.php) to give this forum a different look.

About the attachment sizes: admin center >> installed 'mods' settings and options >> scroll down a bit >> edit maximum attachment sizes, allowed attachments and maximum attachment folder size.
It's better to disallow guests from uploading anything and disallowing .exe from being uploaded.

Thanks for the link Ken and thanks for coming by :) . I don't plan to mess with the look of this forum, but I will be putting another forum together soon that I am interested with changing the defaults quite extensively.

I have been to your  forum  (http://www.emperor.eglador.com/forum/) and I like what you have done with the look  ;D.

I will see about changing the attachement settings in a little bit. Thanks for the heads up!

: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 June 27, 2003, 01:05:01 AM
Added my own mod to highlight (using bolding) thread subjects, in the message index,  that you have posted in. This feature will not be useful until we get a lot of topics and some more members, but better to be prepared I always say. I have tested this mod on the test forum and have had no problems. I even posted a thread in the yabbse forums and no one said anything about my code so I guess it will do.

: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 June 29, 2003, 05:59:19 AM
Added another of my own mods today. I basically updated Who's online to mimic the look from the Fed2k forum. If you set your location on the member map, in your profile, your country flag will now show up in the list as well. ;D

: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 01, 2003, 01:46:12 AM
Yes, I have seen it. I am not sure what the problem is :( . I think it has something to do with the server that the forum is running on. I have the same scripts running on  my test server with no problems.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon July 01, 2003, 01:52:01 AM
Your test server is a Unix based one, if I'm not mistaken GameHeaven.nl is hosted on a Windows server. Not shure if that should require a different setup for some files ?
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 01, 2003, 01:57:16 AM
Well I have no control over the server settings at gameheaven.  The Yabbse forum is platform independent because it all runs through php scripts and database calls.  All the specific settings have been set for some time now without any problems until today. I think it might be a full disk since the tmp dir is on C:\ while the forum is running on D:\. Just a hunch of mine.  It could also be that the IIS webserver needs rebooting. Who knows. I know it has nothing to do with the forum scripts.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon July 01, 2003, 02:07:56 AM
Could be they upgraded Win2K with servicepack 4 recently ;)

For the rest, it indeed should be independent. ..mayby some one at the server has changed something. Or it's just one of those random Windows errors.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 01, 2003, 02:13:43 AM
Well I emailed TicTac, the other admin you may have noticed, with the error message and some of my thoughts about what the problem may be. He actually can get to the bottom of the server settings and get rid of that annoying error message.

Sherlock, what happened to our Flag conversation messages ??
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 01, 2003, 12:11:20 PM
Sorry, they are gone. When we had that problem last night with the error message I restored the latest backup of the database thinking that might be the problem. Obviously it was not the problem.  That backup did not include those 4 posts.

I have checked into the flag problem you are having and it has to do with your member name. You have a space in the middle of your member name and that is not being parsed correctly in the sql query I wrote. I have to do some research into how to get around this. Grypon had a good suggestion that you should try. Try logging in with your admin account Nyarlathotep and edit the membermap for that account and you should see your flag in who's online. Hopefully I will find the syntax that will allow me to correctly get a row back from the database on your member name. I may have to user member ID instead since that is a integer.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 01, 2003, 12:53:29 PM
Well I just found out what the problem was last night. The hosting provider was applying updates to the server last night. According to TicTac the provider does this without any prior notice.  The time frame that this happened is probably not a problem if you live in the Netherlands (where the site is hosted from) because it would have been 4:00AM in the morning.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: TicTac July 01, 2003, 01:08:46 PM
I requested notifications for updates. The good news is the hosting provider will implement a mailinglist for updates in their new websitecontrol app. It will take a while before this goes live. Php has been updated to version 4.3.2 last night.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status

The problem with the flags in Who's online seems to be back again for me...

Nevermind, it seems that my pin on the member map has gone for some reason..
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: Doc Nyar July 09, 2003, 08:24:35 PM
Sherlock, as soon as I change my profile (doesn't matter what), the pin and info on the member map seems to have reset as well. Meaning I have to place the pin again and have to fill in the details again. Is that normal behaviour, or undocumented feature ?
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 09, 2003, 08:30:51 PM
I have noticed that as well. You can update the member map without having to click on the "Save" button of your profile. Anytime you change your profile settings the member map data is lost for some reason.  I will look into it some more this week. Maybe I screwed up some part of the update for that mod.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 10, 2003, 12:46:29 AM
I think I fixed the member map getting erased when you update your profile problem. Give it a try!
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon July 10, 2003, 02:15:34 AM
Seems to be working for me. Re-placing you pin and canceling changes nothing, doing nothing and canceling still nothing. Chaning it and saving wil save your pin as it should at the new location. Removing it removes it ofcourse. . ...
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 July 10, 2003, 02:29:56 AM
The fix I made is related to changes you make in your actual profile and not on the member map itself. Before the fix, if you changed anything in your profile you would lose all of your membermap data. Now you shouldn't. Thanks for helping out though.

Hi Zamboe, nice to see you here. I think the mods like who's online does not work because the people who wrote those mods did not update the spanish.lng file. I am not really certian what the problem is though so I have posted a question on the yabbse Spanish support forum : http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?thread=25069

Let's see if someone responds. When I get a chance next weekend I will look at the spanish.lang file myself.  Hopefully we can  get some or all of the mods working in Spanish.

There is a confirmation pop up window for deleting your account.  I can edit the profile script to not allow a member to delete their own profile easily enough. I am in the middle of some other forum related stuff so it will have to wait until next week sometime.

Today I added the old "Lockup Thread" from the westwood/dune2k forums. You can check this thread out in the Other boards category here:

http://www.game-heaven.com/forum/index.php?board=26

Please take some time to read through this great thread.
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 October 26, 2003, 02:02:07 AM
One other thing. I adjusted the forum settings for threads. Now threads require 30 posts (instead of 15)  before making a new page of posts. This was done to accomodate the new Lockup thread which had over 100 pages before using this setting. So if topics you were following seem to have less pages now don't be alarmed. It has less pages because it takes more posts to add another page.

I don't know if it was just me ol' eyes playin tricks on me... but for a second did the post count say 10,000? I remember thinking "He must have added the lockup thread" but obviously that couldn't do it, since now it is correct...

Just to let everyone know. Occasionally, this is only the second time I have seen something weird like this, the server has problems and requires a reboot. Since neither Doc, Gryphon, TicTac or I have access to this server we have to wait for the people at Doc's web hosting site to actually cycle power.  Twice in 6 months is not bad statistics for downtime.

: Re:Forum Updates and Status

It's a little slow for me also. It's probably an internet routing issue since Doc is not experiencing any problems.  I assure you it has nothing to do with the database scripts or the server.  This is one of those things we must learn to deal with from time to time.

Thanks for all the credit guys  :-* :D! Actually i did not do anything yet. There are currently still slow actions. The homepage does load fast. That would exclude the webserver and network.

I assure you it has nothing to do with the database scripts or the server
Agreed, database scripts perform well.

So what's going on? It could be php; recently updated. I will check the changelog for php. Perhaps another mysql database user is either screwing up or running batches. Final thought is that the dbs is running against some limit. I will let you know asap.

Please post here whenever the forum does anything slow. Thanks for the feedback!

: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: TicTac January 12, 2004, 09:01:28 PM
I noticed the timeouts increase with the number of users on the forum. Can't find anything to suggest php 4.3.4 is timing out where 4.3.3 is not.

Number6, is it possible with php and the forum to log all opening and closing of mysql connections? There is a max of 750 open connections on the server which used to be 1000. If we have hundreds of connections opening and closing we should consider using a fixed pool of open connections.

Other options are updating to php 4.3.5RC1 or a 5.x beta and checking other dbs limits.

TicTac,

Do you mean that the physical machine is going to be replaced or are we getting a different mysql version?

Another thing that could be the problem is that they are using Windows 2000 and not Linux, like I use at home to test  forum changes on.   Of course I don't get anywhere near the load our web hosting provider does, having tested on Linux and Windows at home I think Linux is the better choice for http, mysql, and PHP services.

That's just my opinion and I have no facts to back it up. Windows just seems less reliable for server functions to me.

The machine will be replaced. It fails to handle a normal amount of connections. I don't know why.

... think Linux is the better choice for http, mysql, and PHP services.
Yeah, linux  (http://www.linux.org) rocks! But where would we be without windows? For a further disc on this open a new thread. I will join in. Btw, linux does not support .NET. ASP.NET is cool (http://www.asp.net)

Probation is just a rank which is based on your number of posts. It has nothing to do with limiting forum features.

It should work. What country are you trying to pin?

Like Phoenix said. I did not realize that you were trying to add your pin by going to the membermap. You need to add yourself to the map in your profile.

Ei, do you have any popup killer ? As you stated, you don't have the member map. When you click on edit member map, a new window pops up. Just guessing here though, as for everyone else it seems to be working..
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon February 04, 2004, 06:05:55 PM
think the problem .. or insingularity is with the language you select as a user. When Ei has selected the Dutch settings the buttons for who's online place your pin and member map arn't there. I just tried it with my profile and it seems to work. Or not work in a way. :)
: Re:Forum Updates and Status
: number6 February 04, 2004, 06:34:57 PM
The language file for Dutch must not have the URL for the membermap location in it.  I found a similar problem someone had with the link not showing in the yabbse forums :

http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?thread=17957/150 (http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?thread=17957/150)

Near the bottom of that page a poster called truecrimson posted this problem:

Hello;
I installed the mod exactly as per the instructions, using boardmod, and manual.  It all seemed to go well, and I get no errors, but in the profile there is nothing at all next to location now.  No button, no text field, nothing.  Also, there is no mention of member map in the admin panel, or the installed mods settings.
On the main menu the member map button appears, and one can view the maps, but no one can place a pin, or even enter a location in the original way.

I have gone back through checking each step, and cannot find anything wrong.  Any ideas?

The next to the last post by Gobalopper on that page says:

truecrimson the link is there if you look at the source but the text isn't showing up. Perhaps you didn't make the changes to english.lng?

I have not seen any posts about other language files so I guess the dutch.lng file needs to be updated. I could look at it when I have some time.

: Re:Forum Updates and Status

I have noticed some speed problems off and on as well. When the site is fast it's real fast and when its slow it's really slow. We may need to contact the new hosting provider about these slowness problems if they continue to persist.

same here. Although it was just one day when it was seemingly slow.

I just did some tests with some of the pages here, and today it takes between 8 and 12 seconds before it displays the page completely.  And that with my ADSL.  Don't want to know how long a 56K modem user has to wait.

It's still slow for me as well for the most part. Still no response back from the hosting provider :( .

This new server does give us more disk/databse space, but the speed seems to suffer quite a bit.

I often get a message "you already submitted this post!...blah blah", when I try to post, and more odd, when editing posts and trying to submit PM's. I think this occurs when I'm logged in for long periods of time as I often forget to log out. The problem goes away when I log out and log in, so there. I currently use Firefox 1.0 btw.

We're currently busy setting up on a new server, which is maintained by Dogracer. It's located in Amsterdam on a ISP site.
Not only do we have more control over the server, but the speed should improve as well. With that, hopefully all problems we ecncountered too...
: Re: Forum Updates and Status
: Doc Nyar November 05, 2006, 01:19:21 PM
As you have noticed, we've ran into some problems with our host. Right now the forum has moved to a temp setup and we're wroking ona permanent fix.

You may experience that the forum is a bit slow, but at least thanks to Gryphon it's back up again.

The Game Heaven website rests on a web server in Rotterdam. (7th Foor of The Cube)
As some of you might have noticed for just under 2 hours today a couple of servers on that floor have had network problems resulting in Gameheaven being unreachable for just under 2 hours.

On the positive side, the server didn't experience any downtime and this is if I recall the first downtime Gameheaven has had this year.

: Re: Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon December 13, 2010, 08:24:55 PM
Tonight (CET somewhere after midnight) I am going to pull the plug on a couple of SUN servers. New ones will take over. The new ones have been humming for more then 2 months in test and in addition almost 100 days in the current configuration to run a couple of pre-production test. So far so good an a number of sites already have made the transition without any hick-ups.

Game Heaven will be upgraded to SMF 1.1.12 and be running on the new cluster in the morning. I am not expecting to experience more then a couple of minutes downtime if any at all.

update:
Both updates have been completed. I haven't noticed any interruptions or side-effects.

I added a special board for Magic the Gathering (http://www.gameheaven.nl/forum/index.php/board,141.0.html) and a group to go with it. And made some changes in the forum order. Staff and moderator boards are all the way down and game boards are up.

Seems more appropriate that way. :-)

I have played around a bit on the main page (www.gameheaven.nl). Nothing fancy.

And currently the forums are at version 1.x of SMF. I am still doubting to upgrade them to 2.x.
: Re: Forum Updates and Status
: gryphon December 12, 2011, 11:56:08 PM
It was a long and bumpy ride. The forum has had a fresh install to clean up the 250MB it was consuming. Considering a clean install has about 20MB I thought that was rather a lot.

The forum-version has been upgraded to SMF 2 during the process.

Hope you enjoy the new version. :-)
