Disappearing Taskbar in Win XP
« on: March 11, 2005, 03:45:51 am »
I am having a weird problem, when I'm away from my computer I come back to it to find that the taskbar at the bottom of the screen has completely disappeared ?

IE there is no start button or anything, it is still shown as started though in task manager ???

The only thing that fixes it is a reboot, also when I try to restart windows using the task manager it hangs on the " saving settings " window and I'm forced to hit the reset switch, any ideas ?

Is the rest of your desktop still there (the shortcut icons?!?)

Do you have a screensaver enabled or power savings active ?

have you tried, pressing ctrl alt del, and then execute a new "explorer" task

ctrl - alt - del, taskmanager, file -  new task , type in explorer.exe.

does it start then only a new windows explorer screen, or does the taskbar appear?

That's the idea. :)

My guess was the screensaver crashing and taking the taskbar with it. So if you get some cofee, get back and nothing has happend. . .. Your taskbar will still be there....

It seems to have cured it, but why would a windows screensaver crash ?

I tend to agree with Bako. Windows is notorious to crash in a heart beat from my experience.

All joking aside. Great work on troubleshooting this problem Gryphon!

Interesting. I have noticed that mine started doing that too (though pressing the Windows key or CTRL+ESC fixes it). I too have a screensaver running (just the standard "ticker" type from Windows).

Maybe they screwed something up in the latest patch? I've only had the issue for about a month or so...

I tracked down the fault , it was the hot fix KB 885836 that changed the windows shell.dll in the system32 folder.

I found that my AVG reported the change to the shell.dll so I then checked the date it changed then compared that info to the update dates, finally I tracked it down to that fix.

Hopefully Microsoft will release a fix !
